Product Description:
When a gentleman is restless and bored with the careless pleasures of London society, he needs to discover a new diversion, and if that diversion is a beautiful woman, so much the better.
Temptation
Jonas Tallent, who has masterfully taken the reins of his family's estate, never expected a delectable morsel like Miss Emily Beauregard to step into his library, but he certainly isn't about to hire her as manager for the village inn. A lady as tempting as Emily belongs in a ballroom, or a bedroom—preferably his.
Surrender
Emily herself hadn't expected her current circumstances, but she has her reasons and doesn't plan to share them, even with someone as seductive as Jonas. Yet he can be so devilishly persuasive. But a villain knows her secret, and soon danger threatens Em, her family, and the powerful love she and Jonas have found in each other's arms.

I hope she reads these comments. If Ms. Laurens name was not on the book I would think someone else had written it for her. I could do better. The sentences are excrutiating at times they are so poorly constructed - I have to read them over and over to even figure out what she is trying to say. I don't know who edited this book but they should be fired. I am getting tired of spending good money for lousy books. These books are not cheap. I have read every one of her previous books and for the most part I have enjoyed them but she seems to expect people to pay money for work that is not her best effort. The quality of her work has been going downhill. You would think her writing would be improving over time since she has been doing this for many years. I would like my money back. I don't think writers are in a position today to take their customers for granted. This book is also boring. Nothing happens. A lot of walking around doing nothing. The dialog is flat, there is no tension among the characters, and the plot is more predictable than usual. So far I have been using the book to put myself to sleep. If I could have given zero stars I would have.

It seems that after a time, the best authors fall in the trap of using certain devices over and over again. Laurens seems to have little "helpers" in a workshop who fill in certain scenes for her, the way the old masters often did in their painting workshops. The descriptions of seductions, the touches, the shivers from a look, etc., often seem as though another hand than hers is on the computer--that or she just reworks old scenes, changing enough so they are not total repeats. Her "independent" strong women are so weakened by the thought of sex that they crumble into ninnies at the sight of, of course, the tall, boadshouldered, tight buttocked, long, lean, but muscular-thighed men.
I could barely push myself to turn the pages of those scenes and continue. What a disappointment. Perhaps not turning out new books so fast would help; in other words go back to being the Laurens of the middle period.

Jonas has returned to his home in Devon after having lived life to the fullest in London. He is trying to re-establish the "family" ancestral home as an inn. He needs someone to manage the inn as the old manager has "passed".
Emily is an impoverished noblewoman with siblings to care for and a secret. She offers to manage the inn for Jonas. The secret involves treasure and intertwines the two families.
While not the best of the Cynster novels, this book has just the right amount of mystery, tension and humor to entice the reader.
And of course the Cynsters are involved. An enjoyable read.
