Product Description:
While covering the basic principles of mechanics in an example-driven format, this innovative book emphasizes critical thinking by presenting the reader with engineering situations. Compelling photorealistic art, and a robust photograph program helps readers to connect visually to the topics discussed. Features strong coverage of FBDs and important ABET topics. Chapter topics include: Vectors; Forces; Systems of Forces and Moments; Objects in Equilibrium; Structures In Equilibrium; Centroids and Centers of Mass; Moments of Inertia; Friction; Internal Forces and Moments; Virtual Work and Potential Energy. For professionals in mechanical, civil, aeronautical, or engineering mechanics fields.

The 5th edition of Bedford & Fowler Statics provides a tremendous introduction to important, basic material in mechanics and structural engineering. There are excellent textbooks in statics and I have used all of them in over 30 years teaching statics at Arizona State University. B&F 5th edition is currently my text of choice. A user has to be well-prepared in math and physics to make optimal use of any technical textbook, and this book is no exception. It is a tremendous value, too, given how it presents completely, succinctly and without errors, critical foundational material for civil (structural) and mechanical engineers. Some of the bad reviews you see about B&F Statics at Amazon are 8-10 years old, and it is true that the earlier editions were not as good as the fifth. (I think 8-10 year old reviews on any book that has gone through several revisions could be deleted). I do not know either Prof. Bedford or Prof. Fowler, and have no vested interest in writing a good review.

unfortunately you don't get much choice in whether or not you can use this book . . but the problems are unbelievably difficult even though I have already finished 3 semesters of physics, 4 of calculus, and am only taking this as an elective since my university doesn't have a chemical engineering major. What a waste. . with such a terrible book and poor instruction I don't think I will learn anything and it will probably only set my gpa back more. Avoid if possible!

This is easily one of the worst textbooks I have ever come across. I hate to be honest about it, but statics is a hard subject to learn/teach. The sample problems are far too simple to be useful in figuring out how to do problems at the end of the chapters. My instructor isn't too bad. I feel like I understand most things in lecture, but I get stuck almost immediately when I sit down to do problems from this book. I feel the chapters do not present enough information to do the problems at the end of the chapters. I dislike this book. I strongly recommend you not buy this book. There is also no student's solutions manual for it. The book itself is very unhelpful. It is also way too expensive and really isn't worth the money. I think the least they could have done was come up with a student's solutions manual to help students understand the steps when they get stuck on a problem. I guess the publishers just don't care enough.

I never received my book and ended up canceling my purchase because the company wasn't reliable and wasn't available to contact AT ALL!
