Editorial Review:

Product Description:

Emily Hudson is a renowned archaeologist who travels the world to save priceless artifacts from theft or destruction. Her best friend and partner, Joel Levy, is always at her side—until one day, when her entire crew comes under attack. Joel and Emily are held hostage by a sadistic captor who is determined to find the missing link to a legendary treasure. For weeks they struggle to survive against terrifying odds, pushed to their limits—and beyond…

John Garrett has worked for the CIA, British intelligence, and whoever else was willing to pay for his services. This time, a Washington operative hands him what at first appears to be just another assignment: to track down, and save, Emily and Joel. But it quickly becomes much more, especially when Garrett finds himself drawn to someone as dauntless and bent on revenge as Emily. Soon, they’re catapulted into an astonishing adventure in which nothing—and no one—is what it seems. And lives hang in the balance as one man and one woman unravel the explosive truth behind a conspiracy hidden for generations.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - horrible waste of time and money
What a waste of time and money. This must have been something originally written when she was in high school and has recently taken it out and decided to publish. The plot line is contrived and ridiculous, the interactions between characters is droll and completely predictible, the dialog is what you would expect from a teenage girl. There is no need for the reader to use any imagination since the story line is so predictible. Don't bother.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Another author joins the list of "Never Agains".

I got about half way thru this book and deserve a prize for getting that far. It won't even be going into the Goodwill bag, too disgusting.

The characters:

Emily - will remind you of a silly sheep who has declared war on a pack of wolves.

Garrett - smuggler of what, drugs, weapons, stolen art, that isn't quite clear. The most manipulative, controlling character I've had the misfortune to encounter. This is the poster boy for the type of man who turns abusive when his women don't obey. And imagine this, he is our hero and Emily's love interest.

Staunton - master craftsman at torture. Guess who he wants to torture next, our little Emily.

Someone please tell me why this trend to horrific torture in `romantic fiction'. Who wants to read about prolonged agony? Remember the name Iris Johansen, never again.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - boring
I bought this book in an airport to help pass the time. I wasn't expecting much, just some light entertainment for the flight. After reading about 200 pages, I started skimming through more and more, until I just gave up and tossed the book aside. The plot was so absurd and there was no character development, and ultimately I just didn't care what happened to the people in this story.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - book
i did not know it was going to be hardback but good book excellent condition arrived on time

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Hmmmm...
Every so often I pick up a book outside my reading zones to see why some authors are popular and to stretch my reading experience. I'd not read Johansen before and apparently this was not the book to start with. Deadlock had potential for fun entertainment, but it needed another good round of rewriting and editing. I see it more as a product of the rush to publish and please readers than a book lovingly crafted to please author and readers alike. The story, described elsewhere, was implausible, but the writing didn't manage to create the suspension of disbelief necessary to make me not care. I found myself rewriting in my head which isn't a good thing when I'm looking for light reading and have my internal editor turned off.

Still, I saw hints of good entertainment and may try Johansen again, definitely an Eve Duncan instead of a stand alone. Since even her fans are disappointed in this one, I'll trust them that there's much better Johansen entertainment out there. That said, even with quick writing, this one is better than others in the genre I've read so I'll give this one three stars and call it middle of the road for this type of book.
