Editorial Review:

Product Description:
With her now-classic novel Outlander, Diana Gabaldon introduced two unforgettable characters — Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser — delighting readers with a story of adventure and love that spanned two centuries. Now Gabaldon returns to that extraordinary time and place in this vivid, powerful follow-up to Outlander....

For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland’s majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones ... about a love that transcends the boundaries of time ... and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his....

Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire’s spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart ... in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising ... and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves....

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A fine title for a wonderful book
All of Diana Gabaldon's books are true works of art. Of the thousands of books I've read her storytelling distinguishes her as an artistic craftsman capable of bringing to life complex and compelling stories that blur the mind's ability to reconcile that the story is fiction and not a personal account. Read them all, read the companion and then read them all again. Every word is worth it!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Does not follow the back jacket description
While I LOVED the Outlander book, I was highly disappointed with the second book, "Dragonfly in Amber." It was very misleading from the back jacket cover's description of what the book was supposed to be about, and I was therefore highly disappointed wtih the direction the book took. It was very difficult for me to get through. Where I raced through all 642 pages of the first book in less than a week, this book took me almost three months to finish.

If you can manage to get through this book though, definitely read the third and fourth books. They are well worth the money and effort.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Eyes on history
Diana Gabaldon does a wonderful job putting you in France and Scotland in the era of this backdrop. I would love to see the Outlander Series as a mini-series. It has everything and more.
The charectars are very well drawn. The story is compelling.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Riveting!
This second novel in the Outlander series follows a different format from the first. When this book opens it is definitely not what you expect. We move to the year of 1968: twenty years after Claire returns from the 18th century. This book serves as a piece of the puzzle: at the beginning you know what happens in the end (that Claire comes back to the present) but you do not know why. This book explains what happened in the 18th century during the Stuart uprising that brought Claire back.

Diana Gabaldon is an excellent writer. Her use of minor characters from the first novel impressed me; these characters took on a greater importance in the second novel. She did a good job of intertwining all the characters lives. Some characters are connected in ways that you do not expect.

However, this book can become frustrating because of the constant references to war, kings, princes, etc. I mean to say that it can get confusing with all the names of royalty. I encourage you to push through it though because it gets better. Even if you don't enjoy the battle scenes and the Stuart uprising still read the book! It's definitely worth it.

Diana Gabaldon keeps you guessing till the last page! The ending is definitely not what you expect. I found myself shocked and surprised at various points in the book. There is a depth and richness to Jamie and Claire's love that astounded me while reading. Gabaldon does an excellent job of showing their true love for one other. I would definitely recommend continuing the series if you loved Outlander.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The Outlander saga continues...
I am happily writing this review within a half hour of finishing this novel simply because I am glad I finally got through it! Long gone are the days I could polish off a nearly 1000 page book within a few days. Grownup responsibilities kept me from finishing this behemouth of a book sooner than I would have liked--a whopping two weeks!

Once again I entered the world of Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall but, as I began, I find Claire back in 20th century Scotland, twenty years after her initial disappearance. What had happened? When I last left them, Claire and Jamie had escaped to France and were in the process of planning their next step. I realized that something had gone horribly amiss in the 18th century I would have to keep reading to find out.

Diana Gabaldon does not disappoint in this second novel. The plot continues to move at a steady pace, slowing down twice during the story but jumpstarts once new characters and situations are introduced. John Randall is back, as is the Duke of Sandringham and the roguish Dougal Mackenzie. New characters are introduced in the persons of Brianna Randall (Fraser), Roger Mackenzie, and Alex Randall. Gabaldon keeps the action going with surprising new plot twists as does the constant passionate antagonism between Jamie and Claire.

Great read--even with the often mentioned smirk or corner of mouth twitching everyone does.
