Editorial Review:
Amazon.com Review: Anita Blake may be small and young, but vampires call her the Executioner. Anita is a necromancer and vampire hunter in a time when vampires are protected by law--as long as they don't get too nasty. Now someone's killing innocent vampires and Anita agrees--with a bit of vampiric arm-twisting--to help figure out who and why.
Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't human. The city's most powerful vampire, Nikolaos, is 1,000 years old and looks like a 10-year-old girl. The second most powerful vampire, Jean-Claude, is interested in more than just Anita's professional talents, but the feisty necromancer isn't playing along--yet. This popular series has a wild energy and humor, and some very appealing characters--both dead and alive.
Product Description: Published over ten years ago by Ace, Guilty Pleasures marked the debut of a series that was destined to grow from cult favorite to a major New York Times bestseller. Now, for long-time Anita Blake junkies and newfound fans, Guilty Pleasures makes its trade paperback debut. Readers will learn how Anita Blake started raising the dead-and killing the undead. And how she met Jean Claude, the master vampire destined to become not only her biggest nemesis, but her greatest lover...

When it comes to Vampire/Werewolf series I think I've read everyone or at least attempted to. This series was recommended to me by a good friend who had read the Twilight and Laura Adrian "Breed" series so I assumed I'd like it. That was not the case. It was not for a lack of trying, I read this first one, moved on to the second, and then jumped to the most recent in the series hoping that maybe the newer installment would catch my interest. It didn't work.
The low down for those who are thinking of picking it up and are not familiar with it is as follows: the heroine (Anita) is a reanimator (brings the dead back to life) and vampire hunter/killer. So she works part-time for the cops and the rest of the time as a private eye type. Oh, and almost 4got to mention she does need something on a regular, sex, like Vampires need blood - its her thing. She's petite, cocky, assertive, and a loner. She lives in St. Louis one of the Vampire capitols of USA. The writer plays St. Louis off to be a sort of New Orleans or what have you, and visitors come from all around to go to the Vamp district and hang at the bars.
I'm all into dark and seedy in this genre, but I got more of a Chippendale review feel from these books. One of the main Vampires runs a Vampire strip club were all the Vamps are excitedly cheap in their described appearance and attitudes. Then there is the numerous other characters (most of which seem to be strippers), werewolves, were-tigers, were-leopards, and even rat-men (sexy)??? The book read like a comic book to be honest. Each book sets Anita up for a new mystery to solve and there is some eroctica with the flavor of the month.
Hope I didn't tick off any die hards with this review, but I just don't think this series is up to par with many others (like JR Ward, Kelsey Cole, Laura Adrian). The best way I could describe it is to compare it to the Mercy series that is written by Patricia Briggs, but that's no good because I like the Mercy series beacuse of its easy fast writing.

The heroine in Guilty Pleasures Anita Blake is a tough cookie. She's smart and quick. The Anita Blake books are a feast for the mind.Never a dull moment from beginning to end.

As a fan of vampire fiction in general, I have a hard time not loving anything vampire related. This book was well written and fun to read. While I'm excited to read the next one, I'm not sure that I'll stick with the entire sereis as this book teetered right on the edge of my tolerance for risqueness. Anita is a thoroughly conflicted individual and is really fun to read about. I'll give the next one a chance, but hopefully Hamilton doesn't take the sexuality too much farther.

In Laurel K. Hamilton's book Guilty Pleasures we are introduced to Anita Blake, a young, pint sized, spunky girl who has the ability to raise the dead. Anita lives in a world were supernatural beings - vampires, wereanimals, etc - live right alongside humans. By day Anita works for an organization call Animators, Inc and she raises zombies for money. She is also known in the vampire world as The Executioner and if often charged with the task of executing those vampires or other supernatural creatures who do not follow the law.
One morning Anita gets a phone call to attend the batchlorette party of a friend that night at a place in The District (where most of the vampires in the city live/work) called Guilty Pleasures. While there Anita is asked to work for the vampires to search for the person who has been murdering others of their kind. Anita, who hates vampires, refuses. The master vampire of the city, evil incarnate in the form a child, forces Anita's hand by threatening the life of her friend. With no choice in the matter Anita plunges head first into the case and along the way deals with wereanimals, zombies and people who want to kill her.
I really enjoyed this first book of a series. I found Anita's character to be likable and funny. She is a flawed persona with a heart of gold. The mystery of the book was enjoyable although not super difficult to figure out. I will certainly be checking out more books in this series to see what happens next in the world of Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter.

This book will provide you with an entertaining read, but by the end of the book you still will not really have a good grasp of the world of Anita Blake. The author focuses only on moving the story along and introduces people solely as devices to get from point to point in the story arc. You rarely get an idea of any character's motivations or background. The author introduces concepts with little explanation. Throughout the book, I really didn't care about any of the characters, and they almost became interchangeable. The action sequences were simple and dull and lacked any tension or suspense at all. If you are looking for a story that includes vampires but is without any exposition on the characters or world inhabited by the characters, then this book will keep you reading until the end. Just don't expect it to make any kind of impact on you or motivate you to continue the series.
