I have enjoyed books 1-4 of Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed Series except this one, #5, didn't work for me.
It seems that the reviewers here who had a problem with this book, had a problem with the romantic aspect. I agree with them. The 'romance' felt rushed and odd. Our hero Niko was just okay - he wasn't as bright as a hero should be. The heroine Renata was so abrasive. I strongly disliked a good deal of their dialogue which bordered on the melodramatic, oddly enough. It seemed like suddenly they were in love, and this after she really put him into at least 2 dangerous (VERY dangerous) situations. One of those situations, by the way, (I don't want to give any spoilers) would have at least left Niko justifiably pissed off at her, but he wasn't! No hard feelings for nearly getting him killed?! No, instead he finds he is irresistibly drawn to her. How, I wonder, since she flips between being so darn caustic and then is moping and whining repeatedly to him, "Will we find Mira? Will she be ok?" Shut up! And what does he do? He keeps giving her the same answer, over and over, "I promise you we will find her... bla bla bla!" Then they're having cataclysmic, totally unrealistic sex, and oh, by the way, they realize they are falling for each other. Based on what!? AND if Renata is so tortured over the missing Mira, how the heck could she even be in the mood to get it on?!
On the good side, there is a lot of action and plot, lots of really nasty baddies to keep things interesting as well as developments relating to the overall picture of the series. But as to how things wound up for the H/H HEA, I really lost interest. I'm not sure what happened to Lara Adrian's writing in this book.
Like I said, the previous 4 books have been well-done and Lara has so far been one of my favorite paranormal romance writers. I guess not all the books can be 5-stars, but I'm hoping that this book is not a sign of what is to come, or I'll be really sad.

In Adrian's 5th installment of her Midnight Breed series- we get the warrior Nickolai's story. To be honest, his story was one I was fairly indifferent about, but ended up being a fav.
Nikolai is in Montreal on a particular mission. Sent by the leader of an elite group of warriors known as the Warrior Breeds - a band of fighters initially brought together to destroy the malicious alien/vampire progenitors who were wreaking havoc on the human population- Nikolai must track down a 1st generation Vampire and warn him about the attacks that are being perpetrated on their kind.
But when he is ambushed by a powerful woman whom he knows is the key to finding Yakut, the Breed he's looking for, he discovers the Gen One Vamp is far more sinister than he's been led to believe.
Nikolai also knows the woman who felled him is not the evil creature she portrays, but he cannot understand why Renata is working for Yakut. Imagine his surprise when he gazes into the eyes of a young girl who can foretell the future and sees that his own future is intricately entangled with Renata's.
A warrior in her own right, Renata wants nothing more than to be free of the ruthless Yakut's grip. However, he holds her securely by his side with the one thing she cannot fight- her empathy for others. But when the young seer she is protecting is sold out to an even more dangerous evil,- the Gen One known as Dragos who is building an army to finally defeat the Breeds who stand between him and world domination- she sides with the strangely attractive blond warrior who is somehow managing to break down the walls she's erected around her heart.
Before long, Niko and Renata find themselves at the very heart of the battle between good and evil that has overtaken their world, with nothing more than each other to rely on. Will they learn to trust the bond between them in time to defeat the forces arrayed against them or will Dragos finally unleash the hell he's created and destroy the world?
Full of action and yes- romance- Adrian does a excellent job of tying together Niko and Renata's love story with the plot that's been building since the introduction- several books ago- of the evil Dragos. Veil of Midnight flawlessly advances the story arch of the big bad bent on destroying the cadre of Warrior Breeds, yet somehow manages to leave you tearing your hair out for more.
I loved Renata's strength and vulnerability and Niko's courage and heart makes him an excellent match for her. Adrian does such a fine job of defining them, that I can as easily see these two characters fighting together in battle, as I can see them living happily ever after. What more can you ask for in a modern romance novel?

I loved this book for a number of reasons
- The main female character- Renata- is anything but a helpless, frail female. She is strong, fierce, powerful and yet still utterly feminine. She is a total bad-ass with an iron will. She singlehandedly rescues Nikolai from containment facility for heaven sakes. I love strong female characters.
- Nikolai has no emotional baggage from his past that interferes with him falling for Renata. He doesn't have a "tortured soul" or "I'm evil, stay away", or a "I don't deserve to have love" complex. This is very refreshing. He doesn't constantly run away to find a diversion from her, questions his feelings or push her away emotionally either. Here is a male who knows what he wants and goes after it. But then again, Nikolai is a seize-the-day kind of guy.
- The characters know what each other are from the beginning of the story - he a Breed Vampire and she a Breedmate. All the cards are basically on the table from the get go and therefore no need for any kind of deception about the whole Vampire/ blood drinking thing.
- There are sub-stories taking shape throughout the book that normally I hate because I just want to focus on the main characters and don't really care to read what's going on from the bad guy's perspective. But the plot twists and sub-stories are so interesting. I actually didn't mind reading them. For example in the case of Dragos, Hunter, Fabien and even Lex (Alexei).
- Another thing that is interesting about this book, Nikolai spends the entire book away from his brothers at the Order. The whole thing is played out in Montreal away from the Boston compound. The good part about this is he gets to spend day and night with Renata and we get to see their relationship progress without any interference from the members from the Order.
- I like that even before the last chapter of the book the main characters are already bonded together and are looking to their future together. Unlike the previous book with Tess and Dante, I feel like Niko and Renata's story is completely resolved at the end. However, you are left wondering about what's going to happen to the other characters including Hunter in the other books to come.

I loved this book. I saw Ms. Adrian's name come up several times and decided to read the series. The first book was ok, the second book was horrendous and I can go on. But this review is about this book and it us by far the best one. I loved their story, how they grew with one another and all the new characters. I am looking forward to Mira's story and Hunter's story as well as all the other warriors! I hope Ms. Adrian becomes better in her writing and her storytelling. I cannot put her on the same plane as Feehan, Ward and Showalter but maybe one day she will be there!

I really liked the 5th book in the Midnight Series. The beginning of the story was hard to get into but the 2nd part really picks up. I loved Renata. She was a kick b**t heroine but what kind of girl would Niko like but that kinda girl that was into weapons. They turned out to be one of my favorite couples in the breed series along with Dante and Tess.
