Product Description: When Sookie's brother Jason's eyes start to change, she knows he's about to turn into a were-panther for the first time. But her concern becomes cold fear when a sniper sets his deadly sights on the local changeling population-and Jason's new panther brethren suspect he may be the shooter. Now, Sookie has until the next full moon to find out who's behind the attacks, unless the killer decides to find her first.

Hello again, Truebloods - you've come this far and you've yet to go further still, no doubt with much enthusiasm. "Dead As A Doornail", Book 5 in the Southern Vampire Mysteries, is a hell of a good time, replete with all the charm, tenacity and spunk we've come to know from our voluptuous telepathic heroine Sookie Stackhouse. By now we readers of this lively and flippant series have come to realize that author Charlaine Harris's imagination truly knows no bounds and her rollicking paranormal stone of a story gathers no moss, rolling along into yet another perilous adventure. Some of you are probably wondering, "What sort of trouble could Sookie possibly get into at this point?" You highly underestimate the possibilities. In this particular chapter in her exhilarating life (which picks up directly where "Dead To The World" left off - her involvement with the undead doesn't give her a lengthy reprieve from peril), the dastardly antagonist she is desperately trying to fend off is a deadly sniper who targets the shapeshifting community, a race of supernatural beings of which Sookie's brother Jason is a now a bonafide member.
Sookie has always had a curious sexual magnetism toward the "supes" but for this portion of the series, she has innumerable wooers. Her old lover Bill pops out of the shadows to offer comfort and aid, Eric is desperate to find out whether he was intimate with her while his memory was lost, Calvin (a werepanther) courts her considerably, Sam still nurses his affections and Alcide returns to pursue her, his "abjured" girlfriend Debbie now completely out of the picture (thanks to Sookie's Annie Oakley clout in the last book). Like a crazy bout of fencing, Sookie parries each of their advances while trying like hell to figure out who's been taking literal shots at her "supe" acquaintances and it doesn't take long before that darned New Year's Resolution of avoiding injury is broken with a bullet to her arm.
Bottom line: Once you start the Southern Vampire Mysteries, it's unlikely you'll stop. Harris is a great mystery writer who has found a most interesting niche in the mish-mash of vampire and werewolf lore, shapeshifters, creatures springing straight from Greek mythology and the natural superstition and spirituality of the Deep South. It's a formula that's as curiously appealing as the fairies that roam Bon Temps and beyond.

This is such a great surprise from Charlaine. I really loved that she just doesn't stay on one theme (vampires), but instead goes all over the supernatural realm and in depth. It is so interesting to read about the secret inner workings of weres, the term for what people know as werewolves. Jason has a surprise fate, and unfortunately, Eric is somewhat absent for most of this book, which is sad after he was all in the fourth book, but understandable.

Okay, I give Charlaine Harris props for the last four Sookie Stackhouse books, but this one, not so much. Dead as a Doornail lives up to it's name, it's dead. There is very little action until more than three fourths of the book is complete. No romance, no biting, no shape shifting and no Eric for goodness sake! Sookie just sits around complaining about her lot in life. About half way through, the pace picks up and we get some action with of course Sookie's life being threatened and the were-wolf community heavily involved. For me, this book lacked the humor and insight into the characters that the previous books had. It was, shouldI say it,......boring. But Harris manages to redeem herself in the last quarter of the book with some twists, tension and a new sexy character named Quinn. Although I'm still a huge fan, this wasn't the best book in the series and wasn't as well written as the others. I do look forward to the next installment and hope that Harris brings her game.

I liked the True Blood series so I found the books online and ordered a few. I found that I was fascinated by the characters and story lines, even more than the series. I can't stop reading. It is such an interesting way to think about the world, and it makes you want to jump into the book. I think real life seems a little dull at the moment.
I've now bought all the rest of the Stackhouse books and some of Harris' other books which I'll save for when I am mourning the end of the Stackhouse novels. I just bought the Stackhouse books in Spanish, too, so I can brush up on my Spanish. I thought that would be fun after I read the English version through a second time.
I read all the time and I've never enjoyed a book more. I hope Harris will write a few more.

In the fifth installment of the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries there is a sniper on the loose who is shooting shift-shapers. Sookie, everyone's favorite telepath, is especially worried as her brother, Jason, was recently bitten by a were-panther, making him one also. He is at risk of being shot and Sookie is also concerned that the were community will think Jason is the shooter, angry at what happened to him. The police can't find a link because the are unaware that there are shape-shifters, much less that they are being shot in their animal form.
Add to that, Sookie's house has been burned down and her boss, a shape-shifter was shot. Sookie's friend and former potential romantic interest, Alcide, a Were (were-wolf), wants Sookie present as the Were's have a ceremony to determine to next pack leader. Vampire Eric agrees to lend his club's bartender to replace Sookie's injured boss. But on one condition; Sookie has to tell Eric everything that happened between them during the period when he lost his memory. Sookie tells him, Eric is speechless.
I really enjoyed this installment as we get further into the supernatural community. This book focuses more on Sookie alone and her relationship with men take more of a back seat. Vampire Bill has only a cameo appearance.
