Product Description: After a decade spent in isolation in the Ugandan jungles thinking about stuff, David Cross has written his first book. Known for roles on the small screen such as "never-nude" Tobias Funke on Arrested Development and the role of "David" in Mr. Show With Bob And David, as well as a hugely successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, Cross has carved out his place in American comedy. Whether deflating the pomposity of religious figures, calling out the pathetic symbiosis of pseudo-celebrity and its leaching fandom, or merely pushing the buttons of the way-too-easily offended P.C. left or the caustic, double-standard of the callous (but funnier) right, Cross has something to say about everyone, including his own ridiculous self.
Now, for the first time, Cross is weaving his media mockery, celebrity denunciation, religious commentary and sheer madness into book form, revealing the true story behind his almost existential distaste of Jim Belushi ("The Belush"), disclosing the up-to-now unpublished minutes to a meeting of Fox television network executives, and offering up a brutally grotesque run-in with Bill O'Reilly. And as if this wasn't enough for your laughing pleasure in these troubled times, some of the pieces splinter off with additional material being created online in exclusive video and animated web content created solely for the book-a historical first (presumably)!
With a mix of personal essays, satirical fiction posing as truth, advice for rich people, information from America's least favorite Rabbi and a top-ten list of top-ten lists, I DRINK FOR A REASON is as unique as the comedian himself, and cannot be missed.

I have always loved David Cross as a comic. Though he does talk about the same topics as when he is on stage, it comes across differently on paper. It seems like he just thinks everyone is below him if they don't share his opinion on topics. That actually might not be true. He might just really have opinions that I don't like and therefore I think I am above him. Either way, doesn't really matter. He has been one of my favorite comics for a while, but I don't know that I will view him the same way after reading this. Just my true feelings.

Wow, tough crowd. This book doesn't suck so much folks. No, it is not a timeless masterpiece. That would be Cross's performance as Happy Time Harry and Bert Banana. Nothing will top that. EVER. The negative reviews reflect a very, very high standard these thoughtful and devoted fans have for their comic hero. They make good points. I'd agree the audio version is actually a good way to go cause the material just sounds funnier being read aloud by the comic that wrote them and Cross's voice for some reason is funny to me. Lots of funny parts in this book, but I'd say the open letter to Larry the Cable Guy and the pieces like on Mary J. Blige's public statement that "God Wants Me To Bling" are worth the purchase of the book, especially if your a fan of David Cross.

I am a big fan of David Cross' standup. He consistently makes me laugh out loud and I was looking for similar from this book. I bought it to read on a vacation and was disappointed. It is amusing, but I only laughed out loud once. I think there are two issues: 1. The material is not as good as what I have heard in his standup. 2. His comedy does not translate to the written word. Inflection and delivery are critical and without those this material did not meet my expectations. I would recommend buying one of his cd's over getting this book.

This has been the best book I have read in a long time. For those who don't get it and feel let down is another thing that is great about this book. I tore threw this book in one day. I have dyslexia and poor vision so reading is a real bitch for people like me. Thanks David.

I am admittedly an avid David Cross fan. I have seen him live, heard all of his comedy albums, and now read his first Book. I have read through the book twice, and listened to the Audiobook version (read by Cross), once.
The book is not meant to be taken literally, almost everything in it is a joke. Including the "about the author" section which had me laughing all the way through. Other comedians have written books which are more or less just an adaptation or translation of their stand up material, to a book format. Cross' book is not one of those books. Cross has comprised essays, fictional and non fictional, satirical and serious, into a wonderul woven string of comedy reading. I don't want to get into detail about the contents, as it is best read if its not spoiled. But it is a very funny, very well written, smart work. David Cross has proven time and time again to be one of the intelligent, most articulate comedians, and now "authors", in our time.
I am suprised that the book is not rated higher. I usually don't bother reviewing things, but Cross' book kind of caught me off guard with how good it was, in relation to how much other people seem to not be digging it at all. All in all, I love it. It was well worth it.
