This is the 1st of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. The book introduces the world of the Brotherhood and tells the story of the Blind King and his shellan, Beth. It also introduces many of the characters that will be developed further in the series. This series is not for young adults-it is VERY adult with sexually explicit scenes. However, the sex is not gratuitious; it is totally within the proper context. Once you start, it's very difficult to put down. I have "turned" many co-workers and friends on to this series and everyone has come away as devoted as I am. It's fun to compare who your "favorite brother" is! We have even discussed the ideal actors to portray the Brothers in an imaginary movie. In summary, a GREAT vampire series!

And thank goodness! I love this series, and I love Wrath. The best part is that Wrath and Beth are revisited throughout the rest of the series so you continue with what was started. I think their love story was better done than other's in the story, but as an opening book for a series, wasn't amazing. That being said, read it and the rest. This series rules.

If you want to find a new book series that will draw you in and capture your attention, then J R Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood is the next book series for you! In 2007 a girlfriend of mine told me about a book someone had let her read while on a plane ride. She said that the explanation of the book the person gave her seemed hooky to her, but she had time to kill so she tried it out and loved it. Then in May of 2008 I decided to read the first book which is "Dark Lover". I even got my best friend to read it at the same time. We both love the book so much that my best bud went online and bought both her and me the rest of the series that were available at that time. We actually got seven of our other friends to try the Black Dagger Brotherhood books and they were instantly hooked too! Now we all just wait for the next novel to come out, just to read it in a few days and wait again. I couldn't put the books down. I would read a book in around two to three days. J R Ward describes the locations and scenes of her book so well you feel like you could walk your way through the main buildings where most of the story plots happen. I would recommend this book series to those whom like romance novels and or dramas to read J R Ward's books. It is a bummer her books didn't become the vampire books that turned movies (aka Twilight). Though I must say it would be hard to find actors to fill the role playing shoes of the men in the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I need to add that although J R Ward does a good job bring a new reader up to speed, if you don't read them in order you will miss major opportunities to really get familiar with the story lines and personalities of the characters. I would say reading them in order is a must. At least start with "Dark Lover".

*** Spoiler Alert***
I have bought the audio version of this book and am now sadly disappointed that I wasted my hard-earned dollars on this.
I plowed through to the end of this book with much difficulty. The plot was overly simple, characters had only half a dimension, dialogues were worth a cent, and ... there were too many amateur mistakes made by the author.
To me, a good love story's selling point is the sexual tension between two characters. And Ms. Ward forfeited this point by making her hero and heroine have pornographic sex in the first two "minutes"... Yes! Literally "minutes" of meeting each other. Why, oh why DID you do that Ms. Ward? If you could've just held onto to the tension at least until after 3-quarters of the story, this novel would have read so much better and I could have forgiven most of the cheesiness of the writing.
I am so sorry that I have to give it 2 stars for this and my harsh criticism. But any author who makes her heroine jump all over a stranger who breaks into her apartment and forces him to have sex with her within few minutes of seeing him deserves nothing more.
I could have given it one star. But I always believe in giving the author, at least, some small credit for sticking with the story in their minds and completing a novel; a feat, I'm sure, that is not quite so easily achieved.
