Customer Reviews
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Not that bad at all...
Picked this book as a fairly long shot to re-introduce myself into C++ / OO programming. (Notice: I was a C / assembly / Magic developer between '87 and '97.) With all this background I hoped for some easy (and fun) reading about the latest version of Objective C. Boy, I was wrong... This book is definitely not for the "absolute beginner". Though it runs through all the basic stuff at light speed, it is too dense for someone with zero programming experience.

Now to the good part. If you can work your way through the chapters, spend enough time with actually typing / compiling / running / analyzing those examples, you will have a good basic knowledge of Objective C (and C in general). I have fiddled with XCode for a while, but always ended up using something else for my in-house development needs. Thanks to this book, XCode and Obj C are my friends now.

Verdict: recommended with reservations. Better have some programming experience beforehand, but a good book to bridge the gap between other languages and Obj C.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Way too many irritants
There is a lot of "heavy duty" learning in this book (mostly if you are new to programming). The writer comes across as very knowledgeable and forcefully tries to inject humor to stay in line with other "for dummies" books which detracts from the intense subject. Also, there are SO MANY typos and misspelled words (like on page 178 in listing 7-1: main in Budget Object.m" in the "NSMutableArray" section. The code should have read "... [NSMutableArray alloc]" but this is how is was sloppily written "... [NSMutableArrwwwwwwwwwway alloc]". HOW on earth did NO ONE pick up on this, even the spell checker would have caught that. In the first 190 pages that I have read, it is extremely obvious that no proof reading and/or checking was done on this book, AT ALL!!!" Extremely disappointing and frustrating for a "for Dummies" book with such poor quality control.

Next big disappointment is the many references to the author's website. After reading the first few chapters, I went to his site, and the publisher's to find an errata as so many errors/mistakes were encountered but absolutely NO MENTION of his book on his site, and no errata page on the publisher's site (as of October 18, 2009).

After this experience, I cancelled all my pre-orders with Amazon for books written by this author. It is too painful to read through the mistakes, and the incessant "will be explained in later chapters" references found in this book. I will be looking to other series / writers to obtain the knowledge I am after.

Extremely disappointed that the "For Dummies" would allow this book to be published without any sort of quality check/control!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A dummy is how it made me feel.
Pros- tough material laid out in a friendly, easy to read format with real-world examples. I really did learn a lot from such an introductary level book.

Cons- a few well-placed, crucial editing mistakes that lead the reader off on some wild goose chases. Also the author's webpage isn't nearly as helpful as he indicates it is in the introduction. Neal, you REALLY need to publish an errata page.
