Or dreams are the stuff this book is made of, both ways work.
I have loved the movie based on this book since I was a kid, but had never had the chance to read the original story. Now that I have, I have to say the book is so much better (even though it would seem impossible).
I actually got to care about the characters, even those that only appear in one chapter. I felt as if I knew them in person, and they all are presented as characters with their own lives and stories that go on even after their appearance here.
The relationship between Atreyu and Bastian is very special (and very real). In the second half of the book (which I did not know if I'd like before I read it) is where we see most of this relationship. It made me get concerns about Bastian, to the point where I'd want to scold him.
I smiled a lot of times as Bastian defeated some of the obstacles in the final chapters (and laughed out loud at some points during the book, as well).
The book's presentation is very good. The cover features a beautiful illustration and is very durable.
The text inside the book is printed with two inks, one for the "real" world and one for the world of Fantastica. These same inks are used in the illustrations for each chapter.
I highly recommend anyone to buy this book. Kids and adults alike. They will all love it.
And after reading it, they will most likely want to keep reading other books, too.

Although I haven't watched this movie recently, I've always loved it. And after reading this book, I can't wait for the new remake to come out. The movie is very loosely based on the book, but never the less I love them both. Although the book is easy to follow, the detail of the picture the words paint in your mind is wonderfully elaborate. I received the book last week and have been reading it every chance I get and I just finished it a couple minutes ago. It makes me want to go home and watch the movie.
I am 34 years old and don't do much fictional reading, but if you liked the movie this book is a must read. There's just so many more characters, plots and background information than in the movie. I have such a warm fuzzy feeling inside now :)

Having loved the movie version for years, and finally discovering that it was based on a book, I decided to purchase and read the source material. All I can say is, WOW! As is often the case with movies that come from books, the printed version is infinitely richer, fuller, and more complete. As much as I love the first film, it only deals with half the book, while the second is a shabby take off of portions of the second half. So if, like me, you're in love with the story that never ends, do yourself a favor and get this book.

Fantasy literature is my favorite genre; has been for many years. So when I finally got around to reading this book, after perusing some of the 5 star reviews (many of which stated that this book, although intended for the 9-12 age group, would be enjoyed by adult fantasy readers), I was very much looking forward to a great fantasy/adventure.
This is the tale of a young boy (Bastian) and a quest that takes him into the fantasy world of a book that he is reading.
It is a story that is generally well written, but despite having some good qualities, I just could not get into the 'flow' of this story. Though the quest was indeed a noble one that does have some dramatic and touching moments, I found the writing was somehow geared for a definitively younger audience than myself.
I've cut my fantasy teeth on Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings', Asimov's 'Foundation', George R.R. Martin's 'Ice and Fire' series, Erikson's 'Malazan' saga, also the likes of Bakker, Abercrombie and J.V.Jones, just to mention a few. These aforementioned authors tend to pull no punches when it comes to gory battles, horrific acts and clandestine plotting etc. and I must admit that these are the type of tales to which I've become addicted.
'The Neverending Story' was OK-ish, however, it was tame, too tame for my tastes. It lacked for me that subtle excitement, that propensity for the unexpected that my favorite fantasy books just seem to exude almost from page one. I hesitantly admit that I found myself actually skimming some parts (not a good sign) because I was bored and uninterested in what was happening to the characters within this tale.
Conclusion:
A fantasy story with qualities reminiscent of a faerie tale; meant I believe, for the kinder, gentler and probably younger, fantasy lover. If your looking for battles, deceit and treachery, the chilling unexpected etc. then look elsewhere. In all honesty, this is one of those books that I have difficulty understanding the apparent adult popularity it has achieved. Also somewhat difficult to rate. And while I can understand a 5 star rating if you loved this book, but to me...1 1/2 to 2 Stars.

This book was for a younger group of readers. It would have been a great book if I was a bit younger.
