This is best-selling author Harlan Coben's sixteenth book, another exciting Myron Bolitar thriller, with all of his helpers, his best pal, the strange gun-toting Win, his agency partner and aid in his all-too-frequent escapades Esperanza, and her ex-wrestling side-kick Big Cyndi.
Myron has to deal with French and American police, the CIA, Mossad and Al Qaeda, as well as Terese Collins, his ex girl friend from a torrid affair of ten years past, who begs him to fly to France to help her, while he is involved with another woman. Myron agrees and ends up being lied to, beat up, shot, held hostage and sought by the police as a murder suspect.
Terese's ex husband has been murdered. Who killed him and why? Blood is found at the scene of the crime and DNA reveals that it belongs to a child of Terese and her ex-husband, a child who was killed in a car crash ten years ago. How is this possible? Whose blood is it? Could the dead child still be alive? If so, where was she for the past ten years? Why has she suddenly reappeared?
The book has some unusual scenes, including drugging prisoners to make them talk with a drug that causes them not to remember their ordeal. Is this cruel? Is it moral? Also, doctors freeze the placenta of new born children for possible future use of stem cells. Also, the police reveal that they can now tell where an email account was created, making it easier for authorities to find the identity of people sending inappropriate email messages.
The book has an exciting out of the ordinary ending, different than most mystery book enthusiasts would expect. The ending raises many unanswered thought-provoking questions that add to the delight of reading this fine book.

I have read most of Coben's Myron books and stand alone thrillers. So I was excited when this new one came out. However the series seems to be getting a bit stale. What is the point of making your main character a sports agent if you are not going to have him involved in that setting? I realize there are only so many sports, but do we really need this guy to be 007? And how many times will Win get him out of trouble. How about a stand alone Win book since he seems more interesting at this point. Myron makes wise crack, drinks Yoohoo, has Win save him from danger. This series needs some new life. Coben can be entertaining but you pretty much know where he is going to take you. This book had a twist ending which was not really plausible. It seems like every book these days has to have that twist ending but sometimes having a credible and realistic ending is nice as well.

I should know better than to start a Harlan Coben book ten minutes before the World Series game between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies. Thinking I could start Long Lost and then put the book down while I watched the game was foolish.
Once Coben gets his hooks into you, you're stuck. His tightly crafted story keeps you turning the pages until you finish the book and realize that not only has three hours flown by, but so has the baseball game.
But during those three hours, the reader is captivated. Long Lost is the newest entry in Coben's Myron Bolitar series, but if you haven't read any of his other Myron books, you will still be able to enjoy the story without being lost.
Bolitar is a sports/entertainment agent in New York City. He receives a phone call from a woman he had a torrid affair with ten years ago, asking him to join her in Paris. Although memories might make any man run for the first available flight, Myron is involved with a single mom who lost her husband in 9/11.
Myron and his loyal best friend/multimillionaire Win (think Bruce Wayne/Batman) are forced into a fight with a bully of a middle school basketball coach (anyone who has ever been involved in youth athletics will recognize the type). The coach humiliated Myron's girlfriend's son in front of a gym full of people, and when Myron calls him out on it, violence follows.
Myron's girlfriend tells him that she is moving to Arizona, and when word comes down that the coach and his buddies are cops and Myron and Win could be in serious legal trouble for the beating they gave them, Myron decides that a trip to Paris is a good idea.
Nothing is ever easy in Myron's life, so naturally his trip to Paris is fraught with danger. Terese, his long lost love, has brought him to Paris to help her find her ex-husband, whom she believes is in trouble.
Terese's ex-husband is murdered, and she becomes a suspect. While Myron tries to help her clear her name, he runs afoul of Paris law enforcement, and somehow Homeland Security, Israeli Mossad, and Interpol become involved. Add in some weird kind of cult, genetic disease, and the possibility that Terese's daughter whom she believed she killed in a car crash years ago may still be alive, and you've got yourself a barn burner of a story.
The great thing about Coben's books is that you never know where he is taking you. You can try to figure out where it is all going, but he always manages to surprise the reader in the end. You find yourself literally holding your breath as you read, and when you get to the end, you can finally let it out. Sometimes I'm surprised that I don't pass out from lack of oxygen before I finish reading.
His characters are well drawn, and Myron is one of the classic good guys in comtemporary fiction. His relationship with his parents is touching, and he and Win make one of the best buddy teams around.
One section of the book particularly interested me- Myron makes a visit to a doctor at the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Center in New York, and I was so excited when I read that because my husband has a connection to the center. It was such a cool shout-out!
I give Long Lost my highest recommendation. If you are looking a thriller with terrific characters, a fun sense of humor (his one-liners are hysterical)and one that will keep you turning the pages, pick this one up. Then get busy with the rest of the Myron Bolitar novels.

Coben is one of my favorite writers.
The book started off well and I'd have to say it kept up the suspense. But the ending just kind of petered out and got to be very unbelievable.

I have read all the Myron Bolitar books by Harlan Coben but this is the first one I took the time to review. I found "Long Lost" to be one of Coben's best in the series. It was a fast and exciting read. Note to those who have not read previous books by Coben with Myron Bolitar as the lead character, it may be a little difficult to get up to speed with the background of all the other characters (Win, Esperanza, etc.) I suggest that you might want to go back and read all of the previous novels that include Bolitar. I have rated them in my personal journal as being either 3 or 4 stars and basically enjoyed them all. I am rating this one a 5 star because I thought it was the best to date. It was a fast read, full of action, had a complex plot and it maintained my interest to the end, things that I look for in an entertaining novel.
The story picks up with, Terese Collins a TV personality, who Myron ten years previous dated placing a call from Paris seeking Bolitar's help. Reason being she is a suspect in her ex-husband's murder. Myron Bolitar, sports agent, lawyer, and retired FBI agent, (some combination) responds to his long lost love dropping everything to be at her side. Throw in a terrorist cell and a secret (I won't tell you) that Terese Collins reveals, and we are off with a novel that is hard to put down.
If you want more read the other reviews on this novel, but beware they may reveal too much and spoil the fun. I recommend the novel; it was a great escape from the daily grind.
