Gabrielle Maxwell witnesses a murder outside a popular nightclub, and then like any good citizen reports it to the police. The police only half believe her and think that she is a little off. She did manage to take pictures of the crime as it was happening but they are not very clear, at least to the police. They tell her they will follow up with her. A few days later a "Detective" Lucan Thorne comes to see how she is doing and what exactly she saw. Gabrielle is instantly attracted to Lucan and she doesn't know why. Lucan Thorne is actually a Breed warrior who is a vampire but kills those of his breed that have gone rogue. The Vampires that succumb to the bloodlust are those that go rogue and are never satiated. Lucan and six other warriors have made this their duty in life to rid the world of the rogues and try to save mankind. Gabrielle knows none of this and Lucan soon discovers that she wears the birthmark of a Breedmate. If he were to taste her blood they would be bonded for life. Lucan has never taken a breedmate in his 900 years and doesn't know why is so attracted to Gabrielle. Romance ensues and a lot of very steamy sex. I have never read a J.R. Ward book so I can not compare them to her series. I know others have said they are very similar, but if you want a quick, very hot read then this is the book for you.

I was hoping for a good series to tied me over until the next BDB book came out. I picked this series over Kresley Cole because the reviews claimed this was really close to the BDB book series. I am not seeing the comparison. Vampires check. That's about it. I thought this book was very thinly written. Where at times JR Ward gets lost in the details, this book read like Cliff Notes. There were a few chapters in the middle where it felt that the story was picking up. But then it fell flat for me and it was a chore to continue. I am hoping the series gets better, but for now I am just not feeling it. There doesn't seem to be a strong bond between the Breed, just that we are told that there is. I don't feel a connection to the leader...I can't even recall his name right now. The heroine's gift seemed a little pointless and the whole HEA was too rushed. I would like to read more about the Breed, their connection and less about the heroine outside the times they are together. THAN it may be closer to BDB.
I am completely OCD so I will continue with the series. But right now it is under duress.

I HAVE READ THIS WHOLE SERIES - LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT BOOK - THE EIGHTH- DUE IN THE FALL. I ENJOYED THE AUDIO EVEN MORE - THE SERIES IS WONDERFUL, INTERESTING CHARACTERS THAT YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT. THE ROMANCE IS EXCITING,STEAMY - THE PARANORMAL WORLD IS A GREAT ESCAPE - LOVE THIS AUTHOR!!!!!. I HOPE THEY ALSO PUT THE OTHER BOOKS ON AUDIO. AUDIO ENHANCES THE STORY SINCE YOU PICK UP DETAIL YOU MIGHT SKIP WHEN READING. IT MAKES A HOUR COMMUTE TO WORK FLY. THIS SERIES IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ IF YOU LIKE ADVENTURE, ROMANCE, COOL SUB-CULTURE WITH A GOOD HARD BITE.

If you like weird,exotic subjects (ie vampires) and passion ( ie hot, descriptive sex) then this book is for you. It's a fun read.

I downloaded this book when it was free never expecting what it turned out to be. A great book that I enjoyed. I have now read the next three. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an intense but still the romantic story of a different type of vampire world.
