I had forgotten that the Channel Islands were under German occupation during World War II. This little gem of a book brings that part of history to life with such charm and tenderness that you just don't want the book to end. The format is similar to 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD and FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, but this is the best of the three books. You feel as if you know these people and that they actually existed. It has spurred me on to read more about the Channel Islands and their history and, if I'm lucky, I'm going to see them for myself.

This is one of the most charming, enjoyable books I've read in a long, long time. In my estimation it's right up there with To Kill a Mockingbird. I give it the highest of recommendations. If you're in the mood for a "gentle" read, one that illuminates the human spirit, I highly recommend The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. My only regret is that I can only read it for the first time once. I would love to have the experience all over again.

I wasn't too sure if I would like this book or not. A book of letters... didn't sound enticing to me at all. However, I must say that the author has done a magnificent job of drawing me in. I love these characters! I'm ready to pack up and move to Guernsey! Not only do I like the characters, but I love the writing, the kindness and consideration of each other, the politeness and courtesy! Where has it all gone? It brings to mind a slower paced life with time to value friendships and share.
This book has led me in a multitude of directions, I want to know MORE! I've already downloaded information about Charles Lamb. I've visited the Guernsey travel site. I've looked up a recipe for potato peel pie!
Obviously I'm enjoying the book. I haven't finished it yet, but I had to share that this is one of the best reads I've had in awhile. I'm a mystery/thriller kind of gal, so for me to rave about a book like this, it definitely says a lot about the book, the author, and the writing style. I'm so grateful my book club "forced" me to read it.
Enjoy!

Charming and funny, with a lot of interesting information about the occupation of Guernsey by the Germans during WWII. It even has a happy ending.
I hadn't planned on reading this book, so it was a really great surprise.
