This intense thriller is a work of fiction with a factual basis. Aidan Quinn stars as Annibal Ramirez, an American naval officer with a striking resemblance to real-life international terrorist Carlos 'the Jackal' Sanchez, the scourge of innocent people all over the world in the 1970s and '80s. Mistaken for Sanchez by the Israeli Mossad, Ramirez is arrested but subsequently recruited by the Mossad and the CIA to pose as Sanchez and set him up as a traitor to his underwriters. Ramirez leaves his family, receives training in all aspects of Sanchez's life, and is pulled into the netherworld of terrorism and espionage. How can a movie starring Donald Sutherland and Ben Kingsley be bad? I wish this was a rhetorical question. Portions of this movie have a professional feel, and some of the acting, typically the minor roles, is good. However, the preposterous plot, the clichéd script, the bad B movie caricatures that pass for characters, and the painfully unbelievable performances of those two actors, especially Sutherland, make for a dismal viewing experience. As another reviewer has noted, the movie reeks of low budget. Nowhere is this more evident than the training sequences which employ what look like white-clad storm troopers straight out of Star Wars.
If you're from Montreal, you'll enjoy seeing it stand in for both Vienna and itself. Look out for Notre-Dame Cathedral, the University of Montreal and, I think, the castle-like building on the reservoir at the top of Peel.

I do not discuss plots with movies. Better to not ruin things and let people watch without knowing what is going to happen.
This movie is underrated. Dont know why it never comes on the movie channels, as this is a 5 star movie IMO. Great plot, great acting. Sutherland id classic, Quinn is awesome playing his 'duel roles'.
Starts with a bang, does not let up and will keep you watching til the very end and the ending is quite interesting.
I could watch this 100 times and still love it.

Why had I never heard about this movie before? I didn't have very high hopes because it was directed by Christian Duguay, who made the dreadful Wesley Snipes movie "The Art of War". But I guess most of that film's problems can be blamed on the screenwriting department.
In "The Assignment" Duguay does a good job, and this time, the story is very good. A CIA agent (Donald Sutherland) has been looking for Carlos "The Jackal" for over ten years. One day, an American soldier, Annibal Ramirez (Aidan Quinn), on leave in Israel gets arrested by Amos, an Israeli agent who thinks Ramirez was Carlos, because they look almost exactly the same.
Donald Sutherland comes up with a plan how to get to Carlos and have him killed. After long, hard training, he's ready, but soon finds himself in a very dangerous position.
Aidan Quinn and Donald Sutherland are great in their roles. Ben Kingsley's role didn't give him as much to work with, but he was good as always too. Claudia Ferri also did a very good job portraying Annibal's wife.
The movie was very entertaining and ends in a way that leaves room for interpretations.

I never heard of this movie and recently saw it on either USA or TNT. I think it is riveting thriller. I am big into spy movies and this movie is right up there.

This is a very good spell binding movie. I have always enjoyed the acting of Donald Sutherland, and he is superb. Aidan Quinn is very good in his part as portraying Carlos. Very suspensful. I loved the movie and have watched it several times and still learn something new. I recommend this movie highly.
