Editorial Review:
Product Description: At the core of this Hollywood howto guide is the concept of The Eight Characters of Comedy, the eight specific character archetypes used in sitcoms dating back to the advent of TV. Every actor can find a sitcom niche by identifying with one of these eight characters. Using past and current actors and sitcom personalities, Sedita describes in detail where these characters come from and how actors can play them truthfully. * who is normally cast as The Logical Smart One * why do we love The Lovable Loser * why is The Neurotic such a fun character to play In addition, readers learn how to break down a comedy script, how to identify different types of jokes, how to deliver them with comedic precision, sitcom auditioning techniques, and how to market themselves.

This book was awesome. I just happened to come across this book and thought "hmm, I wonder if this will answer any questions or give me any ideas on comedy?" The answer is "hell yes!!!" This book is just great. It is written with tons of detailed examples. It explains very clearly each of the 8 characters of comedy and how to act, write, even audition for these types of characters. If you have any desire to work in comedy you should buy this book. it will put you ahead of the crowd immediately.

In this book, you should bear in mind that the advice is all geared toward aspiring sitcom actors. I am not one, but I have burned through a good dozen books about humor writing, and this one turned out to be one of the most helpful. It nails down the principles of character-based comedy which are not really explained anywhere else, and so I still go back and refer to it when working on all kinds of things. This book has especially good insight for sketch writing.

Scott Sedita presents a very thorough insight into the structure and characters of Sitcoms. It's good for actors, good for writers. It's well organized and very useful. The kind of book you keep on the shelf and refer to. ACTORS: it's a very good reference for your auditions.

This book is excellent on several levels. It is an extremely useful way to approach sitcom scene analysis through eight archetypal characters, and it has the added bonus of being both funny and fun. I mean, how often does a book help you to become a better bastard? Great for writers and actors - this book is an important resource if you are passionate about sit coms.
