Editorial Review:

Amazon.com Review:
Here's something different: a vampire novel that's light, funny, and not at all hackneyed. Between scenes of punks bowling frozen turkeys on the graveyard shift in a supermarket, or snapping turtles loose in a loft and gnawing on designer shoes, this novel has comic charm to spare. But it also packs an appealingly downbeat message about the consumer culture: Becoming a vampire has given the twentysomething heroine "a crampless case of rattlesnake PMS"--a grumpy mood in which she realizes that she can dress to the nines as a "Donner Party Barbie" and still end up disillusioned and unhappy, just another slacker doing her own laundry and watching sucky TV 'til the sun rises.

Product Description:
Jody never asked to become a vampire. But when she wakes up under an alley Dumpster with a badly burned arm, an aching back, superhuman strength, and a distinctly Nosferatuan thirst, she realizes the decision has been made for her.

Making the transition from the nine-to-five grind to an eternity of nocturnal prowlings is going to take some doing, however, and that's where C. Thomas Flood fits in. A would-be Kerouac from Incontinence, Indiana, Tommy (to his friends) is biding his time night-clerking and frozen-turkey bowling in a San Francisco Safeway. But all that changes when a beautiful undead redhead walks through the door...and proceeds to rock Tommy's life -- and afterlife -- in ways he never thought possible.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Bloodsucking Fiends
There are soon to be 3 books in this "series", by this author. Helps to read them in order...

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Bloodsucking Fiends
After reading so many rave reviews for Christopher Moore books, I decided to read one. I'm not one for vampire stories, but I decided to give this one a try and I'm so happy that I did. This book was one of the funniest I've ever read. I rarely laugh out loud when I read a book, but I couldn't help myself with this one. What a sense of humor. Mr. Moore is so descriptive in his writing and paints such a clear picture that it's like you're actually there, observing from the sidelines. Especially hilarious were the scenes in the Safeway store, where Tommy worked nights with his crew, the Animals. What a gift this man has and how lucky we, as readers, are that he's shared it with us. I can't wait to read another of his books. From the looks of his reviews, I'll have a hard time picking. They all look like gems.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hilarious, touching story of young love and vampires
Christopher Moore is rapidly becoming my favorite author. He's had me snorting with laughter with "Fool," "Fluke," and "Practical Demonkeeping," but his "Bloodsucking Fiends" strikes me as an instant classic.

This lean novel - less than 300 pages - tells the story of the whirlwind romance of two crazy kids in San Francisco. Jody is a 26-year old cutie whose dead-end job and string of dead-end boyfriends quickly cease to be major concerns after she is violently turned into a vampire. (This happens in the first twenty pages of the book - it isn't exactly a spoiler.) Rather than give us the usual "education of Jody" scenes at the hands of the elder vampire, Moore allows Jody to struggle with vampirism - while she revels in her newfound powers, Jody must figure out for herself how to survive in this world of new joys and dangers.

Fortunately for her, she runs into C. Thomas Flood, newly arrived 19-year old wannabe-writer from Incontinence, Indiana. Flood has survived his first week in San Francisco and thanks to the timely intervention of one of Moore's long-running characters, the Emperor of San Francisco, has become the night shift manager at the Marina Safeway. Soon Tommy and Jody are an item, and Moore writes these two characters with such sweetness and verve that they easily eclipse the latest Hollywood teen couples - see ya later, Juno.

Into this mix Moore introduces the Animals, a collection of adventurous misfits who work the late shift at the Safeway. We also get to reunite with Detective Rivera and the aforementioned Emperor, and we also meet the sinister elder vampire who started the whole mess.

Moore has written a comedy to be sure, but there are a few moments of nearly absolute poetry. One spectactularly touching moment comes in a brief passage where a young man, dying of AIDS and mourning the loss of his lover, meets his welcome end at the fangs of a vampire. This is a brief scene, but is so full of tenderness that you have to read it a few times just to savour it all.

If you're a fierce opponent of Euthenasia, this book is going to pose some moral conundrums for you. For everyone else, "Bloodsucking Fiends" is going to be a riot. Hilarious, moving, and steeped in the contradictory lore of vampires, this book is a treasure.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Fiendish Fun
Bloodsucking Fiends, the third book by Christopher Moore, is a light-hearted, vampire love story set in San Francisco; filled with irreverent commentary on the city itself and character types found there.
Follow the trials of Jody, the "cute but not beautiful" newborn vampire, as she struggles with her new life as a creature of the night and her vicious sire. C. Thomas Flood, pun intended I'm quite sure, SF newbie and late-night Safeway clerk falls in love with Jody and the romantic hijinx ensue! An enjoyable read, lots of humor and a solid book from a rising talent.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Blood Lickin Hilarity!
Bloodsucking Fiends has all the elements of a well written, fast paced, and witty novel with murder, mystery, love, and fangs!

The tale starts with a aspiring writer who takes it upon himself to find adventure and a girlfriend in the city that has to offer him plenty of flamboyant and diverse characters, San Francisco. C. Thomas Flood (C. does not have any meaning, he just likes the way it sounds) encounters plenty of divergent locals from the Emperor of San Francisco, his sole duty is to protect this city from evil doers; to The Animals, mischievous set of night clerks of the Marina Safeway who find pleasure in the most outlandish, dangerous, and down right bad ideas.

After notably being dubbed the Fearless Leader at the Marina Safeway, Tommy runs into a luscious and beautiful red head seeking help for day duties. Low and behold she is a blood sucker, a moody one at that, turned by a surreptitious vampire whose only means of entertainment is watching this new fledgling find her barrings and waiting how long "this one" will last.

While trying to comprehend her new and enhanced senses and sun allergies; she is left to fend for herself in hopes of trying to cope with this nocturnal life with the help of her blood offering, nerdy, love-of-her-life equivalent Renfield. Not only must she find a sunless place to live, she must also locate this Fiend that has changed her and that is now wreaking havoc by leaving bloodless bodies around the city for those to point the finger to none other than her.

Christopher Moore is an eccentric man with the ability to write absolutely comical and entertaining novels. I have read A Dirty Job and fell in love with his quirky scenarios and idiosyncratic personalities that will have you laughing out loud and entranced by every word!
