Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Reference book
I am a fanatical user of sharepoint without any formal training, This book has helped me with all of the 'How To's' and has also shown me other things that I was not aware SP is capable of. The instructions are clear and precise making it easy to follow.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Authors paid by the word?
Disclaimer: I stopped reading this book after 3 chapters. It would appear the authors were paid by volume, not content, because there is precious little of the latter and the content-to-cut-and-paste ratio got so bad, I could not get past page after page of instructions on how to click on this menu item or that button to fill in a few values. It is not like the book was targeted to beginning users - the first chapter talks about WSS and MOSS - a beginning end-user needs a conceptual introduction, not details on software architecture. The document workspaces topic in Chapter 2 was introduced out of the blue - I could not find anything before describing what this was or why I should be interested in it. Site security in the second chapter? I didn't even understand enough how or why to use sites at that point. And even if I did want to understand site security, I'd have been hard-pressed to understand it - there were pages that were identical save for which menu item I was selecting. Perhaps this book got better later but I didn't bother. Caveat emptor.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - not much help for SharePoint Designer
I needed more help for Designer than was offered. This was more for a server.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Best book on the market for users?
I'm an IT manager and SharePoint user. I'm not a SharePoint administrator, designer, or developer. I bought this book to learn how to better utilize SharePoint and learn more about the different things you can do with SharePoint.

I found the book to have a wealth of information of the type I needed. Like a lot of technical books it is difficult to read cover to cover. It presents a lot of information, much of which is repetitive since each follow on option repeats many of the same steps. It is more suited as a reference than as a book to read. I would have given it 3 stars for just being hard to read but I believe it is currently the best option for people wanting to learn to use SharePoint. The book has a lot of screenshots and step by step instructions for setting up different portals, libraries, and lists. What is missing is a good discussion of each type of information repository and why you would use each. I also was looking for specific examples of how to implement things like a documentation library. At the end of the day I got the information I was looking for but only after reading through the book and experimenting with SharePoint. I suppose that's the best way to learn anyway...

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Why bother?
I had hoped this book would be different than most other SharePoint books (indeed, the majority of computer books) whose production process seems to follow this technique: (1) paraphrase the online help in the program (2) add screen shots (3) repeat for several hundred pages (4) kill trees. It isn't. I have encountered several issues in MOSS, and since tech support has been severely cut back at my office, there is no one knowledgeable to help troubleshoot those cases where you think you've followed the instructions to achieve a particular result -- yet you don't get it. This superficial book is NO help. I feel I could have written it myself. But I would feel guilty having written it because it doesn't add much value. Two stars for decent organization, page layout and production values.
