Description: In this hilarious update of the much-loved Hollywood classic, Steve Martin turns in a winning performance as George Banks, the befuddled father who has a hard time letting go of his young daughter (charming newcomer Kimberly Williams) when she unexpectedly announces her plans to wed. Tickling funnybones and touching hearts of critics and audiences alike, this entertaining treat chronicles George's hysterical trials and tribulations leading up to the big event. Diane Keaton shines as George's patient, level-headed wife, while funnyman Martin Short lights up the screen as the off-the-wall wedding consultant. FATHER OF THE BRIDE promises to love, honor, and deliver the kind of motion picture fun you'll thoroughly enjoy.
Amazon.com: This '90s update of the Spencer Tracy-Elizabeth Taylor hit is a mix of the pleasant and the silly, a nice enough movie but a little too controlled to become particularly interesting. Steve Martin plays the aging patriarch who is threatened by his daughter's engagement and not-quite-willing to let her go. The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers provides Martin's character with a perhaps too-broad range of comic responsiveness to the situation, some of it gentle (a ritual game of basketball between dad and his little girl) and some of it slapstick (Martin sneaking around his prospective in-laws' house and encountering a guard dog). Martin Short turns up as a wedding coordinator--which has deliriously delicious possibilities--but his inventiveness doesn't quite strike the chord this time. --Tom Keogh

Rating: - Funny with shades of reality
Although over the top re what is normal, enough of the movie is close enough to what happens to a father of a bride that the movie is a must see for all fathers who are about to give away their daughter, as I am.
Rating: - Wonderful
I believe that this is one of Steve Martin's finest films, a touching and hilarious update of the old movie. Martin's acting and comedic timing is stupendous as he deals with a theme common to so many men--letting go of his baby girl.
Yes, the movie boarders on ridiculous quite a few times, but that is the way of comedies. A little over-the-top chaos balances the truly sweet and tender moments that this movie is always ready to give out.
Rating: - A Great Family Film
In today's Hollywood climate, there are very few movies that appeal to an entire family. Children want to see Hannah Montana, teens want Harry Potter and superheroes, while adults want very R-rated drama. Thus, it is refreshing to see a movie that can be classified as a solid family film, which Father of the Bride very much is.
While comedic in nature (how could it not be starring Steve Martin?!), this film is also a touching commentary on how families change (for better or worse) when marriages occur. Its blend of hilarious comedy and touching emotions will have you holding your sides one minute and reaching for the Kleenex box the next.
The real brilliance of this film, however, comes from the terrific acting. Martin's knack for physical comedy is spot-on as the often-flummoxed "Dear Old Dad", while Diane Keaton plays a great "straight 'man'" to Martin's wild antics. Even the then-fresh Kimberly Williams (before she became Mrs. Brad Paisley) is able to nail the emotions of a young bride being swept off her feet.
Overall, this is a great family film that offers something for everyone. Adults will be touched by the film's message, teens will identify with Williams' character, and even younger children will appreciate the physical comedy. If you are planning a wedding, just finished one, or are part of any sort of family structure whatsoever, you will love this film!
Rating: - Funny and Touching
I found this to be funny, touching and entertaining. A cheapskate dad has to let go of his "little girl" and some of his money. The women in his life make it impossible for him to do anything other than go along with it all, and that's what makes it funny.... just how he comes to accept the situation. When dear old dad does, all goes well and is where the film is touching.
