Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video: Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh

Very nice video quality. There are still some grainy scenes in the BR version but nothing to complain about (The remaster of Blade Runner has me spoiled). I'd buy this again.

This is a fantastic movie. Intriguing plot and well pace action. If you haven't seen, I heartily recommend it.
But on Blu-Ray, in a nice home-theatre, this movie is fantastic. A-freaking-plus.
The sounds of the pings, creaks, water rushing, and underwater drama is cristal clear. The improved HD audio format on the Blu-Ray, compared to the Dolby Digital DVD copy I have, really makes this movie shine. The film to Blu-Ray scan quality (video) is fantastic. The entire movie is extremely sharp and as good as any Blu-Ray I have seen to date. I have watched it several times, and still enjoy the quality and wonderful plot this film brings.
I strongly recommend this movie as a 'must have' to any movie buff's collection.

I first saw The Hunt for Red October as a VHS rental on a 26" TV in 1990 and had to own it. When it was released on DVD in mid 2001 I bought it and watched it on a high def 32" TV with surround sound and appreciated it much more. When it was released on HD DVD I wasn't quick enough before the discs were withdrawn from sale due to faulty packaging and I was very disappointed. Needless to say I like this movie.
I have just watched it on Blu-ray on a 50" plasma with audio pumped out through a Yamaha amp and big speakers. The video was superb. The audio was better. It enveloped me in a seamless surround field and truly made me feel as if I was in the centre of the action.
If you haven't got a Blu-ray player buy one just for this movie. You won't be sorry.

Most likely the greatest submarine movie ever made! Crimson Tide is the only thing that comes close. Based on the Tom Clancy novel and set during the Cold War, it tells of a story that the U.S. and Russia claim never happened. The action is intense and the story is rich. The one issue you could have are some of the Russian accents, or lack of (Sean Connery). You will be thrilled and completely engaged by this movie. A MUST SEE!
NOW FOR MY BLU-RAY THOUGHTS: The special features are carried over from the special edition DVD. The transfer is beautiful! The underwater sub battles never looked better, but there are some minor flaws where lights appear at the top and/or bottom of the screen (blue line). Considering how old the movie is, the good far out weighs these minor flaws that only appear twice for a second. The sound is good but not up to par for blu-ray. FINAL VERDICT: The picture is just to beautiful on Blu-Ray to ignore, UPGRADE WORTHY!
