Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This Book is Awesome!
In a time when the government has enough power to control the past, present and future, in a time where you don't even have the right to think freely, in a time when the government can see and hear your every move, how can you fight to free yourself? 1984 by George Orwell is a classic novel which describes the journey of one person and his struggle to gain freedom of body and mind. Winston, a middle aged man lives as most others do, controlled by the supreme leader known as "Big Brother" and the political party supporting him. The party is powerful enough to control the past and therefore shape and create the future. As a lower level employee for the Ministry of Truth, (one of three regions in the party) Winston is required to rewrite articles and printings which contradict any declarations made by the party. While he knows that he is indeed rewriting the past, he is only slowly coming to the realization that the party and "Big Brother" are merely seeking power and supremacy.

This is an amazing story which kept me hooked right from the beginning. Orwell has seen into the future of our society and shown us what our world could be like when a government has too much power. You are able to jump into Winston's mind and begin to feel the same hatred and resentment towards Big Brother as he does. I definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy a crazy story with many ups and downs that literally keeps you guessing until the last sentence. Remember, Big Brother is watching you!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Marxist on '1984'
'1984' is not about the evils of communism (communism isn't evil but the only truth). Orwell was a socialist himself and therefore despised totalitarianism... it is this which '1984' warns against. Fascism inevitably leads to totalitarianism - communism is diammetrically opposed to it. The totalitarian regimes of Russia and China are/were NOT communistic, but are/were failed and illegitimate radical governments. Orwell does not advocate anything but freedom in '1984'. Capitalism does not equal freedom. It is the greatest book ever written.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I loved this book!
I highly recommend 1984, by George Orwell, in any edition or translation you choose, because I feel he was so very prophetic about the times in which we live. This book does not describe what COULD happen - it describes what HAS happened, at least, in some cases and to a certain percentage of the public. The information elite today, increasingly, is using cameras to monitor people - including, with those they target - in ALL areas of their lives. Likewise, people are alienated and rendered voiceless by this faceless elite who churns out lies and brainwashing (in my opinion) to keep them distracted and neutered. Authors names ARE being changed, gifts ARE stolen, composite characters ARE created, triple speak IS practiced, coverups ARE participated in. I know these things are true because I have seen and experienced them, as I am sure we all have, on a sliding scale. Likewise, society is dividing, more and more, into classes - those with insider information and privileges, and the masses who have "freedom" but cannot use it, and live like animals. I see this everyday. The "threat" is the hero of 1984, who dares to FEEL, speak the truth, try to escape conditioning. The villain is the machinery of the system, both in 1984 and today. A very good book on this subject (nonfiction) is Friendly Fascism by Betram Gross - written ten years ago, and, in my opinion, an understatement of what is occurring, but nonetheless brilliant and illuminating.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A true prophecy and warning
This was a great book. I thought every scene was true and had actually happened, even though it was about how the government can control a person or people. George Orwell sounded like a true Prophet as I read this book.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - True Prophesy
As the years pass on, the foresight of George Orwell in his book 1984 becomes more and more amazing. He writes the book as if 1984 is a distant future year when the government and the press run the present, past, and future. Are we not getting to that point now? I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to wake up and see the state of affairs we are in presently in this country
