Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential recording: A young man graduates from college and wonders how to find real meaning in his life. What's an heir to the 9th-century Holy Roman Empire to do? If you're Pippin, son of Charlemagne, you decide to dabble in war, sex, and politics before finally finding love. When Bob Fosse directed the original Broadway production of Pippin in 1972, he transformed what had originally been a relatively innocent college project for composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz into a burlesque filled with broad comedy, bawdy characters, and magical but dark situations. John Rubinstein (best known for his TV work and son of pianist Artur) plays the title character, and Ben Vereen kick-started his career (and won a Tony) as the narrator figure known as the Leading Player. Schwartz's combination of Godspell-like ensemble energy with various pop-rock styles makes for a snappy, tuneful score, including the soul-driven opener "Magic to Do," the soaring "Corner of the Sky," the lovely ballads "With You" and "Love Song," and the romping "No Time at All" (delivered with saucy conviction by The Beverly Hillbillies' Irene Ryan as Pippin's grandmother).
While the original CD release was somewhat notorious for its lack of liner notes, the 2000 remastered release includes an essay on the show's creation, a detailed synopsis, and full lyrics, as well as three bonus tracks. Pippin was originally released on the Motown label, so some of its songs were cross-promoted by Motown stars: The Supremes deliver a conventional take on the gentle "I Guess I'll Miss the Man," the Jackson 5 deliver a blast of high-pop energy to "Corner of the Sky," and Michael Jackson solos on "Morning Glow." --David Horiuchi

We found this album to be what we wanted and expected. It was of good quality.

I saw this show on Broadway several times in the early seventies. It was my favorite musical. I own the cast album and have played it hundreds of times. Vinyl no longer suits my lifestyle so I went to Amazon for a CD. I was thrilled with the remastered version. I know people at the time didn't like John Rubenstein's voice for the role but for me it was perfect. He truly sounds like the lost soul looking for something. A slick singer would not have fit the role. I'm not big on the bonus tracks (that is what delete is for on my MP3). Michael Jackson is great on Morning Glow but the other two are down right bad.
I love the CD but I love the liner notes even more. The information gives another level to the music and story.
Buy it you'll love it. If you are a boomer like me, your sure to know the feeling.

The bonus tracks by Michael Jackson doing covers of a couple of my favorite Pippin songs really clenched it. Very happy with this soundtrack.

I was really disappointed with this recording. Simply put, I saw the movie version and LOVED the vocal power and music power in it. William Katt could sure bust out a tune! He can still sing today, I've heard recent recordings and he is simply an awesome singer. THe other day, I found a copy of this in HMV and bought it, and brought it home, because, first of all, I LOVE Pippin, and second, I'm in a production of Pippin right now. And... I was disappointed.
BEN VEREEN: I love Ben Vereen, but not on this recording. He sounds as if he's singing a soft lullaby. Pippin is supposed to be anything but that. Simple Joys is especially disappointing too.
JOHN RUBINSTEIN: Better than Katt? Really?? REALLY?????? A soft, thin, powerless voice is better than a stronng and powerful voice??? Here, he sounds dreadful. When he sings CotS, you don't believe him.
LELAND PALMER: Not bad! She is phenomenal on this recording, Spread a Little Sunshine has gotten dozens of repeat value because of her voice!!!
IRENE RYAN: I can't listen to No Time At All without feeling sad, especially because she left us so early. She gives a touching and heartbreaking, yet still hilarious portrayal of Berthe here. She really is amazing!
ERIC BERRY: Great voice, definitely adds a more epic feel to War is a Science, and is almost very comical too!
JILL CLAYBURGH: I'm sorry but... I did not like her. Her and Rubinstein's annoying voices combined on Love Song make me want to shoot myself.
THE PLAYERS: Very creepy and intense, they especially make the Finale disturbing.
THE MUSIC: This is where the CD disappoints most. Most of the songs move at a walking pace, thus not a whole lot of energy is evident. Magic To Do is very empty and depressing because of that. Simple Joys... bo-ring! And Extraordinary... *snooze*
Overall, I hope this isn't the best recording out there. Do get the movie if you want better voices.

The quality is great! The digital re-mastering produced sounds I had never heard from my original CD. Plus, the extra tracks are a nice bonus. JD - Toronto
