Amazon.com: Thanks to sharp writing and a pitch-perfect ensemble cast, Frasier became one of the smartest and funniest television shows of the 1990s. Following the 1993 demise of Cheers, Diane's fussy psychiatrist boyfriend, Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer), seemed an unlikely candidate for a spin-off series, yet the show earned smash ratings and dozens of Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor (Grammer) in the very first season. In an inspired bit of casting, Grammer was matched with David Hyde Pierce as his brother and fellow psychiatrist Niles, and the rest of the players included his radio-program manager, Roz (Peri Gilpin), his father, Marty (John Mahoney), his father's physical therapist, Daphne (Jane Leeves), and the dog Eddie (Moose).
In the first season, Frasier and Marty try to learn how to coexist in the same apartment; Niles and Daphne spend a stormy evening in Niles's house; Frasier acquires pushy agent Bebe (Harriet Sansom Harris) and searches for love with Amanda Donohoe among others; his ex-wife Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) makes a guest appearance; the family takes a cross-country trip in a Winnebago; and the two brothers collaborate on a book.
Bonus features aren't spectacular, but are a cut above many similar DVD sets. Executive producers Peter Casey and David Lee provide a commentary track on the pilot episode. In a 20-minute making-of segment, they and the principal cast members discuss the creation of the show, casting (Lisa Kudrow was the other finalist for the character of Roz), and the mystery of the omni-absent Maris. "Frasier Crane's Apartment" looks at the set and props, and each disc spotlights a few of the celebrity voices that appeared as the radio show's callers. --David Horiuchi

(08/15/09) Obviously Frasier is a great show; I don't think anyone would order the DVDs if it hadn't been. My complaint is the way the shows are formatted on the DVDs: You can only watch one episode at a time; you have to push play again at the end of the episode, when you are automatically redirected to the menu. I HATE this. I have another TV show on DVD (Friends) and loved that I could put in the DVD, push play at the main menu, and watch episode after episode after episode (though there is the Episodes option if you like to only watch one episode at a time and then be redirected to the main menu after each episode). I like to be able to do this so I can set the sleep timer on my TV and am lulled off to sleep by my favorite, commercial free, TV shows. Not so with Frasier. If I'm not out at the end of 30 minutes, I have to turn the TV back on and start all over... a process that usually wakes me up fully again. For me, that sucks. I won't buy another season of Frasier because of this.
UPDATE (10/13/09): OK, I lied... but I didn't mean to... it's just that by the end of Season 1, which I began watching over breakfast, I was hooked. So, I bought a few more seasons. I think it's Season 3 or 4, I can't remember which, but a few seasons in and they added the Play All feature. Yay! I know this is a ridiculous reason (to some) to not give Season 1 five stars, but certainly I'm not the only person out there who sometimes needs to set the sleep timer or just wants to sit down, push play, and not pick up the remote every 20 - 30 minutes and hit play again.) So, let me just say that the Season 1 show gets 5 stars and the DVD format for Season 1 only got 1 or 2 stars, thus my 3 star 'average' for Season 1.)

Frasier is a treasure. And for $17.00 plus shipping for 24 episodes you can't beat the price. It's the kind of show that even after you see it multiple times you still laugh as though it is the first showing. We're lucky now if we get 14 episodes of a series in a season. Well worth the $21.00 total!

The first season is truly a "must have". You get to know the characters and the brothers (Frasier and Niles) "quirky" habits. I am an advid fan of the show and I have enjoyed every season. I have 1 more season to buy and I will have the complete set. You can't go wrong with this season!

Season 1 was really funny, the piolet was a tad dramatic but its mostly comedy, the picture is a little dark because its from 1993 but when he is in his home its fine. dont worry the radio station will lighten up in like season 4.

Frasier is a well written show with characters that the audience can identify with. Their relationships are filled with hilarious situations. I've continued to purchase the Frasier seasons and hope to complete the series shortly.
