With superior production values at his disposal, writer-director Gary Ross (Pleasantville) is a bit too reverent toward Laura Hillenbrand's captivating bestseller, unnecessarily using archival material--and David McCullough's familiar PBS-styled narration--to pay Ken Burns-like tribute to Hillenbrand's acclaimed history of Seabiscuit, the knobby-kneed thoroughbred who "came from behind" in the late 1930s to win the hearts of Depression-weary Americans. That caveat aside, Ross's adaptation retains much of the horse-and-human heroism that Hillenbrand so effectively conveyed; this is a classically styled "legend" movie like The Natural, which was also heightened by a lushly sentimental Randy Newman score. Led by Tobey Maguire as Seabiscuit's hard-luck jockey, the film's first-rate cast is uniformly excellent, including William H. This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time...I love the spirit, the heart that is in this movie. It was very well done. It relayed a true story to film brilliantly. The actors were phenomenal, and believable. An outstanding cast. I never thought a movie about a horse, would have me in tears at times.. It was not just about a horse, it was about the family around the horse. The family being the owner, the trainer, and the jockey. You really have a winner with Seabiscuit.Check it out!!!

I had high expectations for this film because of its cast, storyline, and the trailers. But the producer and editor managed to fowl up what could have been a great film. They spent far too much time developing the background of the main characters. I really did not need to be lectured to about shattered hopes during the depression, nor about how FDR supposedly came to our rescue. They could have skipped through that much more quickly and gone to the main theme more directly. I'm not saying that the film was too slow; the pace was not the problem. They just had too much background material. The latter part of the film improves, but its very predictable, and by then it just was not interesting.
There is real lost potential here. It's a good story with good themes: perseverance and recognizing hidden potential. They also assembled a good cast. They tried too hard to make this film seem epic. In describing this film words like bloated, ponderous, preachy, and pretentious come to mind. Seabuscuit deserves two stars for what it was, but one star considering what it could have been.
