Editorial Review:

Amazon.com essential recording:
Where Off the Wall was pretty much straight good times, Thriller introduced dread into Michael Jackson's solo work. By 1995's HIStory, this element curdled into overwhelming self-regard and out-of-touchness, but here it's bracing. While Thriller offers its share of cute ('The Girl Is Mine,' a duet with Paul McCartney that was the album's first single; 'P.Y.T.'), the most memorable cuts remain 'Billie Jean,' 'Beat It,' and 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin',' all of which meld musical imagination and worried-mind lyrics.

There's also the title track, which takes a cue from Parliament's concept pieces in employing Vincent Price to warn that nonfunky forces will 'terrorize y'all's neighborhood.' Thriller, of course, continues to battle with the Eagles' first greatest-hits package for the title of biggest-selling U.S. long-player ever. Bonus material on this edition includes 'Someone in the Dark,' from Jackson's E.T. children's album, and a Quincy Jones interview in which the producer cites 'My Sharona' as the inspiration for 'Beat It'--and, even better, the real-life Billie Jean's claim that Michael was 'the father of one of her twins.' --Rickey Wright

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A cultural phenomenon, but wildly inconsistent
To be fair, it's got three of the best singles ever made, but it takes more than three great singles to make a masterpiece, and most of this is slick, MOR filler, not to mention painfully dated.

The sound effects on "P.Y.T." alone are cringe-inducing. The McCartney duet gets points for tossing interracial love on top of the charts in 1982, but the song itself is very cloying. The title track's cheesy, but it did produce a ground-breaking video. Can't say I'm a fan of "Human Nature," but plenty of people have a soft spot for 'yacht rock.'

Jackson's got a ton of compilations, and as long as you pick one with "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Wanna Be Starting Something," you don't need 'Thriller.' His REAL masterpiece is 'Off The Wall' - track-for-track, a stone-cold classic.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Yes
It wasnt recently inducted in congress as best selling album of all time for nothing!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Three words:EXCELLENCE IMPROVED UPON!!
Just when you think that the LEGENDARY album"Thriller"couldn't possibly be improved upon.....BAM!! It's done!! How?!? Simply put, two(QUALITY)bonus tracks,on it!! "Carousel" and"Someone In The Dark"really impressed me,"right off the bat"...Neither song, had to"wear"on me...I LOVED them BOTH,on the very FIRST listen!!The unreleased 2nd verse of "Thriller"was a nice(hillarious)treat!! In fact, all of the"extras"on this album, were good!! The quality of the two unreleased songs are SO good, that I'm left contemplating:"What ELSE,has "M.J"got hidden in the"vaults"?!? EXCELLENT ALBUM!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - an all time classic, "special edition" is nice
All the non-music craziness about Michael Jackson aside, Thriller was and is an incredible album. I'm not a huge MJ fan, I mean the dude is pretty freaky, but Thriller was a masterpiece album. I like a few MJ songs before this (Don't Stop) and after (Black & White) but there was never a whole album by him I liked except Thriller. Every song is great, and I really like the bonus Quincy Jones interviews, the Bille Jean demo, and the song Carousel that didn't make the original release. Thriller was a once in a lifetime lottery winner of a record, and I enjoy this 25th anniversary special edition thoroughly. My favorite tracks? The only song from the original album I don't like is Lady in My Life. Billie Jean is one of my favorite all time songs ever. EVH's guitar solo in Beat It is legenday for good reason. Wanna Be Startin Somethin is genuis, Human Nature and PYT are brilliant. The McCartney duet The Girl is Mine is charming, funny, and quite ironic considering the later events between the two artists. Thriller gets 5 out of 5 stars from me in any version but the special anniversary edition is great.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of my favorite albums of all time
I can still remember some of the most fun-filled exciting times of my life - 1982 - 1984 -- basically during the time that Thriller was released, the videos were released, and Michael Jackson mania officially began. And it all begins with this killer album chock full of some of the most excellently produced songs that stand the test of time. From Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' to Thriller, Lady In My Life, Billie Jean, PYT, each song is so incredibly produced, detailed instrumentation (REAL MUSIC) with thumping grooves that make me bounce in my seat and reflect on the happy times of Thriller. And the fact that MJ's influence still impacts so many of today's singers and entertainers, well, it just makes me proud and happy to be around to witness this wonderful phenomenon. I remember how everywhere you went people were talking about MJ (in a good way); they dressed like him, sung his songs, danced like him, wanted to meet him, you name it. And the day after Motown 25, when he performed Billie Jean, I recall going to the mall and everywhere I went people - white, black, old, young - were talking about his dancing. It was so exciting and I am happy to still listen to Thriller and cannot wait until the 25th anniversay DVD comes out. I've already pre-ordered my copy and am eager to relive the excitement all over again. Thanks Michael and Quincy for giving us some of the greatest music that we could ever wish for.
