Amazon.com:
Majid Majidi celebrates the immediacy and essence of childhood in this delightful tale of a brother and sister who share a pair of shoes when the boy (though no fault of his own) loses his sister's only pair. Since their parents are too poor to afford a new pair, they keep it a secret, trading them off every day in a mad rush, jumping gutters and navigating the twisting lanes to their schools and back. Then the boy hatches a plan: the third-place prize in a student footrace is a new pair of shoes, and he's determined to take it. The plot may smack of a Disney film, but the direction couldn't be more different. The family scenes are delicately observed, and Majidi captures the spirit of the children perfectly: proud, emotional, petulant, sweet, and disarmingly sincere. The film has a Western-friendly framework without losing the naturalistic eye and lolling rhythm that gives the best Iranian films their richness. Even as he builds to the climactic footrace (quite unexpectedly turned into a nail-biting contest) the film continues to reveal a wealth of discreet surprises, culminating in a conclusion all the more resonant for its sublime delicacy. His efforts earned the film the honor of becoming the first Iranian feature to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film. --Sean Axmaker

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Children of Heaven Puts a Face on Iran.
I experienced this film for a second time at the Denver Film Festival this weekend with the director in attendance. Shot in Tehran, critically-acclaimed Iranian screenwriter-director Majid Majidi's 1998 film, Children of Heaven (Bacheha-ye Aseman), tells the simple, delightful story of a boy (Ali) who, after accidentally losing his sister Zahra's shoes, must share his own sneakers with her. Fearing punishment, the siblings then decide to keep their plight a secret from their parents and teachers, knowing their parents have no money to buy Zahra a replacement pair. This leads to a series of adventures for Ali and Zahra. Meanwhile, as Zahra envies the shoes a schoolmate is wearing, Ali enters a foot race, desperately hoping to win his sister a new pair of sneakers. In many ways, Majidi's film is reminiscient of Vittorio de Sica's 1948 Bicycle Thieves. Worth noting, the film was the first Iranian film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It should have won.

Children of Heaven is a rare experience in cinema. It is permeated with beauty and innocence, which is exactly what makes it such a truly pleasurable experience. In his genuine portrayal as Ali, Mohammad Amir Naji draws the viewer into his predicament. Children of Heaven is ultimately not only a heartfelt love story between brother and sister, but between father and son as well. This is the kind of simple children's film that the Hollywood studios would never make, a movie industry which prefers ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Beautiful story, great film !
Beautiful story that touches our hearts. No more words for this superb film. How can the Iranian producers make excellent films with no much technical resources and with so natural actors? Congratulations !!.Don't miss it and enjoy it so much.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Simply awesome....
This is quite an amazing film, one that leaves an indelible impression on anyone who has seen it. On paper, it sounds like a Lifetime TV movie. A boy loses his sister's shoes, and does everything he can to get them back (or get her a new pair). But Majid Majidi works wonders here, and makes the story not only believable, but moving, poetic, and it has one of the biggest surprise endings that I think I've ever seen. It comes totally out of left field, and you're left wondering with all the ironies the ending contains. The performances here are naturalistic and astonishingly good, especially those by the children playing the leads. Majidi's direction is solid and he really gives this film (and his other films like his masterpiece Baran) a beautiful visual style all its own. Majidi is Iran's most underrated filmmaker. Kiarostami is better known, but Majidi's films have a little more heart than Kiarostami's, and Majidi might actually be the better filmmaker. I hope no Hollywood studio remakes this masterpiece, as it's one of the most beguiling, surprising films ever made about children. It's really stunning.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - SHOE ADDICTS SHOULD WATCH THIS. DON'T TAKE THINGS FOR GRANTED
Everyone should watch this movie. I love shoes and I have over 100 pairs. When I watched this movie, I was really ashamed of myself. It is such a touching movie. Everyone should watch this to appriciate the things we have in life and we take it all for granted. Just see how a new pencil can make a kid happy. It is so pure. Loved it and watched it sooo many times.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful for all ages.
I bought this film for my (8th grade)World Geography classes, unsure how they would feel about a film they would have to read. They LOVED it! My students laughed, cheered and they appreciated the overall message of the film. On my end of the year survey they listed this film as their favorite all year. This is just a great film that transcends any bias' you may have about watching an Iranian film, it shows with a great deal of heart that we are all more alike than we are different.
