For devoted fans and nonfans alike, Spider-Man offers nothing less--and nothing more--than what you'd expect from a superhero blockbuster. Having proven his comic-book savvy with the original Darkman, director Sam Raimi brings ample energy and enthusiasm to Spidey's origin story, nicely establishing high-school nebbish Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as a brainy outcast who reacts with appropriate euphoria--and well-tempered maturity--when a 'super-spider' bite transforms him into the amazingly agile, web-shooting Spider-Man. That's all well and good, and so is Kirsten Dunst as Parker's girl-next-door sweetheart. Where Spider-Man falls short is in its hyperactive CGI action sequences, which play like a video game instead of the gravity-defying exploits of a flesh-and-blood superhero. Willem Dafoe is perfectly cast as Spidey's schizoid nemesis, the Green Goblin, and the movie's a lot of fun overall. It's no match for Superman and Batman in bringing a beloved character to the screen, but it places a respectable third. --Jeff Shannon

I remember when this movie first came out I was somewhat skeptical about seeing it but I finally gave in and was surprised of how good it was and how faithful it was to the comic book. The story itself is basically how Spider-man came to be. On a field trip Peter Parker(Tobey Maguire) gets bit by a radioactive spider and gains powers from the bite. He not only has to struggle with making ends meet he has to struggle with a destructive lunatic called Green Goblin(Willem Dafoe)and also revealing his true feelings about his long-time friend, Mary Jane(Kirsten Dunst).
This movie is so true to the comic book, its almost eerie. Tobey Maguire is great as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Willem Dafoe is excellent as The Green Goblin, J.K. Simmons is great as Jonah Jameson and even Aunt May and Uncle Ben are portrayed and acted accurately. The action sequences are pretty good and even though they use CGI its not an eyesore here as it is in other movies that use it heavily. My only gripe is I could do without the weak one-liners that appear once and awhile in the movie. All in all fans of the comic book as well as the cartoon series wont be disappointed.

The Spider-Man (Three-Disc Deluxe Edition) has everything and more that you want to know about this great movie, bargain for what you get.

People who gave this movie 5 stars, how did you get over the whole throwing web from wrist thing, or hideous goblin costume? Yeah, like army will order a suit with a stupid gargoyle face. I know the whole thing is made up but the movie could at least be faithful to the comics.
Other than the issues above I really liked the movie.

Tobey McGuire stars as an ordinary Peter Parker who happens to be a high school nerd. He also happens to have a major crush on a classmate Mary Jane. One day on a field trip his class goes to a laboratory with genetic engineered "superspiders". As he's taking photographs of Mary Jane a "superspider" slides down the ceiling and bites Peter. He starts to feel sick and then goes to sleep. He doesn't wake up the same man he was when he fell asleep. From then on he becomes Spider-Man. The web-slinging life saving Spider-Man. Unfortunately, as always, there's a villain in town. There's where the Green Goblin comes in. Then Spiderman has to fight a battle between good and evil.
I have never seen any of the Spider-Man comics. In fact, I'm not even a big fan of the cartoons. However, after just seeing the first movie, I wanted more and more of Spiderman. The Spiderman costume for is classic. His abilities are even better:clinging to walls, spraying webs of string from his hand, better jumping capabilities, more strength, faster reflexes, and the special Spidey Sense--which allows Peter to forsee things that are coming at him or coming for him.
All of the scenes take place in New York City. During the film, there's a lot of good animation. Spider-Man swinging from building to building requires effects. I was very impressed with all of the effects. If you have seen the comics or just want to tryout a superhero film, I recommend Spider-Man.

This review will be split into three sections, they will be The Story, The Characters & The Verdict. This will give you a fair and true description of the movie and its characters and will give you my personal opinion of the movie which should help you make an informed decision on whether to watch this film for the first time or whether to stay away like you have already done for six years.
The Story: Tobey Maguire plays Peter Parker an aspiring photographer who one day is taking pictures of his crush Mary Jane Watson for the "School Newspaper" when he's bitten by a radioactive spider. After the incident Peter goes through a change and gains powers that are similar to a spider, he can walk up walls, shoot web, he gains super human strength, agility and has the ability to sense danger before it comes. One day after Peter uses his powers to take part in a wrestling event to try and win some money, his uncle Ben is shot dead, Peter discovers that his uncle was shot by the man he'd let pass by after stealing money from the wrestling promoter who'd cheated Peter out of money. Peter tracks down the criminal and through a series of incidents the man is killed for which Peter makes the decision to become a superhero, thus giving birth to the phrase "With great power comes great responsibility." The best friend of Peter, Harry Osbourne is the son of the CEO of Ozcorp Industries Norman Osbourne.
