Editorial Review:
Description: Based on the King Of Horror's 1986 Best Seller, 'It' is a jittery, jolting excursion into personal fear. 'It' raises goosebumps-and brings out the stars. Harry Anderson, Dennis Christopher, Annette O'Toole, Tim Reid, John Ritter, Tim Curry and Richard Thomas star in this thriller about a malevolent force in a small New England town.
Amazon.com: Is there anything scarier than clowns? Of course not. And who knows scary better than Stephen King? You see where we're going. It puts a malevolent clown (given demented life by a powdered, red-nosed Tim Curry) front and center, as King's fat novel gets the TV-movie treatment. Even at three hours plus, the action is condensed, but an engaging Stand by Me vibe prevails for much of the running time. The seven main characters, as adolescents, conquered a force of pure evil in their Maine hometown. Now, the cackling Pennywise is back, and they must come home to fight him--or, should we say, It--again. Admitting the TV-movie trappings and sometimes hysterical performances, this is a genuinely gripping thriller. As so often with King, the basic idea (the bond formed during a childhood trauma) is clean and powerful, a lifeline anchored in reality that leads us to the supernatural. --Robert Horton

Rating: - Poor Adaptation
The DVD of Stephen King's It is a big disappointment. This is one of the best books that I have ever read and was eagerly awaiting this adaptation. It doesn't portray the unbridled fear that the book does and the acting is average. I give this 3 stars, but the book is easily 5 stars!
Rating: - Logical (and other) problems with "IT"
I've got no problem with Stephen King. I read him like crazy back in the 80s and still admire him. The Shining, Salem's Lot, Misery, Carrie--all horror masterpieces of their era.
I'm also not a snob who can't appreciate a good horror flick, or even a "good bad" horror flick. Love the Living Dead movies, and all the old giant bug movies from the 50s.
But a horror flick, even a "good bad" one, has to make sense. It has to establish and follow its own logic to work. Actually, any film does. My beef with "IT," then, isn't with source material or with genre, but with its inept storytelling and craftsmanship. In a way, it doesn't matter if the book was great. The movie should be able to stand on its own, as a movie. And "IT" just doesn't. It shows contempt for its audience and its source material and tries to get by on King's name and loud overacting.
The plot is paper thin: kids in a small town are menaced by an evil clown/creature only kids can see. They drive it away, but it returns 30 year later when they are adults, so they must get rid of it again. Simple enough premise and plenty there, God knows, for a good horror flick. (Magnificent horror flicks have been made on simpler premises.)But coherence and consistency are still needed, and very quickly, this messy affair starts to show a number of serious problems with both (Gripe time):
The "What is it" problem. Is the clown thing a monster or a demon? Is it natural or supernatural? If natural, how ... Read More
Rating: - IT DVD
This is a favorite movie of mine from Stephen King! With a great, twisting story, it will keep you at the edge of your seat to see what is coming up next! This movie is highly recommended to check out!
Rating: - One of the few movies I can watch multiple times
I can't even tell you how many times I've turned on the TV and found this movie on... I'd probably seen it ten times, but only once from beggining to end... and I still loved it each time I saw IT. I give it four stars though, just because the monster at the end is pretty lame... but hey, TV budget. Who cares? IT is still the shh IT.
Rating: - They all float down stream!
The first thing I said when I watched this movie was "Hey, Seth Green is in here!" Well actully I saw it awhile back but didnt notice Green was in this movie, probably because he wasnt a star then. Anywho, this is a great movie. The special effects are top notch, the cast is made up of all stars, and Tim Curry puts on a chilling performance as the killer clown. This movie does not have gore but it still delivers on the chills. It sort of reminds me of anther King novel turned movie, Stand by Me. Instead of friends looking for a dead body, they are fighting an evil clown that kills children. I do admit the movie is long and there are so cheesy moments, but I still enjoyed this film. I wonder if they had made this movie for theaters, if it would have had more gore. Highly recommend this movie anyways.
