Editorial Review:
Description: CITY OF JOY is the story of a dispirited American doctor (Patrick Swayze), a British woman who runs a clinic for the poor, and an Indian couple — all of whose lives come together in perhaps the most impoverished place on earth, the section of Calcutta known as the CITY OF JOY. Directed by Roland Joffe (The Mission, The Killing Fields, The Scarlett Letter).

The movie came fast, it was in great condition, had no problems in transaction. Great Seller. Thanks
Rating: - Lighten-up
It seems everyone wants to be a critic. To the harsher ones I would say 'lighten-up' - it's only a movie. No book - let alone a movie - is going to capture the complexity of Calcutta. I first visited as a graduate student 40 years ago and have returned many times. There is indeed decrepitude. At the same time I have seen a 90% reduction in poverty and disease. Where the movie succeeded was in capturing the 'joy of life' one finds in Calcutta - from the best food and theatre in India to the vibrant street life. I always wear a smile there even when I'm stumbling over the broken pavement. If this book or film sparked an interest, I would suggest reading Soumitra Das, 'A Jaywalker's Guide to Calcutta,' Eminence 2007. You could order it from Oxford Bookstore Calcutta or prod Amazon to make this little masterpiece more available in America. I appreciated the performances in the film - they were quite good.
Rating: - The primeval shock!
"City of joy" is one of these films which went through unprepared although the significance of his director Rolland Joffe (The Mission and Killing fields).
An disillusioned American surgeon goes to India. And there he will discover the sense of life and bliss in the middle of the poverty of Calcutta.
To my mind, Patrick Swayze reached a high caliber acting with this hazardous and profoundly existential movie (that dates us back to the famous Trilogy of Satjait Ray). The powerful performance of Om Puri as the fearful farmer who eventually will become a hero is worthy to mention.
Rating: - Does not stick to the original story by D. Lapierre
It is a good movie but has very little to do with the original novel by Dominique Lapierre. This story is definitely a lesson in hope and faith. The movie fails so accomplish that. I just didn't like it. I recommend the book instead.
Rating: - City of Joy
I really enjoyed the movie but the book has so much more to offer!!
"City of Joy" the book gets 5 stars!!!
