My son was 3 when An American Tail came out. He LOVED Fivel. We bought him the stuffed "doll" and he loved it to pieces, literally. His dad and I found Fivel at Sears on sale for 15.00 and we bought two, one for him to use, and a spare for whent that one wore out. His dad recently found the spare and gave it to our son's son (age 2). Our son was grining ear to ear when he told me what his dad had given our grandson. So, a new generation of Fivel watching has begun. I'm so glad I found this on DVD.

The first movie is a story about a family (of Russian-Jewish mice) immigrating to the U.S. in hopes of cat free, cheese filled life with better opportunities. The immigration theme is secondary though to the story of the protagonist, Fievel, trying find his family after becoming separated en route to America. It has great animation and a good story; it also has some potential for sucking the fun out of the movie and having an educational discussion with your child. Some kids might think some parts of the movie drag though--that's what I thought when I was a kid.
The animation on the second movie doesn't quite seem up to par with the first one, but is still good. We watch the same family of mice as they travel from NYC to a city out west called Green River, once again looking for better opportunities. Once again, we watch Fievel get separated from his family. Still yet again, the cats are their enemies, but this time the mice are bamboozled and believe the cats to be friendly. Apparently, their experiences in New York City never taught them to be cautious of historical-enemies-turned-friends. The pace of FGW seems a little faster than the first. My brother watched this movie so much when he was a kid that he broke the rewinder. (Back in the day when VHS was the predominant video technology)

Don Bluth is the best and he doesn't disappoint here. This are very cute cartoon movies, well written with Bluths great style of animation.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, it's probably because you're still pretty young. When I was a child, however, Fievel was the man!! This movie was a classic, and was the reassurance in my mind of just how genius Steven Spielberg is. When Fievel and his sister perform "Somewhere Out There" as a duet in their childish, squeaky voices, I can't help but to start crying like a little baby. CLASSIC, CLASSIC...(weep weep sigh sigh)...CLASSIC! :(
