When a psychiatrist (Yves Montand) begins talking to a young woman (Barbra Streisand), he realizes that she can recall a past life while under hypnosis. Although this brash New Yorker is thoroughly modern and somewhat abrasive, he becomes fascinated by the 19th-century English woman who speaks through her. This oddball musical flicks back and forth between period flashbacks and modern times, which may be one reason it never builds up much power in either realm. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever failed at the box office in 1970, one of a number of glossy musicals that could not find an audience in the post-Easy Rider movie world. In fact, one of the film's out-of-place costars is Jack Nicholson, a symbol of the new movies that were making old-fashioned musicals a thing of the past. It didn't help that Paramount severely cut On a Clear Day before releasing it. For all that, the picture is enjoyable and--at the end--really quite touching. Director Vincente Minnelli (Meet Me in St. Louis), then near the close of a fabulous career, maintains his usual careful eye for color and design, and keeps Streisand relatively restrained--for Streisand, that is. --Robert Horton

I grew up watching this movie. I don't know why my sister and I were so obsessed with it, but we would watch this movie over and over and over again. Anytime our mom needed some quiet time, she'd just pop in the vhs and leave us in front of the TV all doe-eyed.
So perhaps this review is biased, but so what? It has a deep connection with my childhood memories, and every time I watch it I get nostalgic and whimsical.
Watching it as an adult does of course clear up some innuendos I had no idea were there when I watched as a child, and this just adds to my enjoyment.
Now, as for the film itself. Perhaps a bit over the top, yes. But that's what makes it so great. Streisand's acting? Perfect. Cinematography? Kind of blurry in a dream sequence 70s kind of way. Not normally a plus, but for this movie it is. The music? The best part!
If you get a chance to watch this movie, you should. That's just my 2 cents.

I saw this movie after Funny Girl, and perhaps that wasn't the wisest choice. This film is the weaker of the two, but it is, after all a different film. Most people, I know, have seen Funny Girl, so this could be a disappointment if one is expected the same level of film. However, it can be terrific in its own way. Barbra gets to play a modern (at the time) character with Daisy Gamble, while at the same time playing Melina Tentrees, a British gal from the past. Her acting is great, and very entertaining. While Yves Montand is not exactly a perfect leading man, he does his best. 4 and 1/2 stars.

what a pretty story. I found the transformation between her two parts amazing. It's no wonder she has the rep she does. I fell in love with Daisy.

If you need to escape for a few hours, put in this DVD, sit back and enjoy. On a Clear Day will remind you why Barbra Streisand is a legend in her own time. There will never be anyone with the voice, the humor, the class, and the heart of Barbra as Daisy Gamble. She is absolutely super! Her version of the title song will stay with you long after you press the eject button. In this day of supposed musical divas (You can fill in the names here.), it is a pleasure to see a real musical diva at the top of her form! Thank goodness for Barbra Streisand (and Liza Minnelli) who keep good music alive for all of us.
