Editorial Review:

Description:
A feature-length world premiere special that tells the story of the ex-Beatle's historic visit to Russia on May 24, 2003. Marking the first time that McCartney had set foot on Russian soil, this concert and documentary also reveals the secret love affair that existed between the Russian people and McCartney during the Communist era.

Amazon.com:
The Beatles Anthology may be the motherlode for fans of the Fabs, but among other Beatle-related video offerings, only The Concert for George matches Paul McCartney - Live in Red Square for sheer emotional and musical impact. It's no coincidence that the latter two chronicle not just concerts but significant events--a memorial for Harrison (he had died a year earlier), and Sir Paul's first visit to the former Soviet Union.

For the Russian audience, McCartney's appearance in Moscow is little short of a miracle. The Beatles were banned for decades by the Soviet government, which regarded their music as the epitome of Western decadence and propaganda, and the fans' only access to the group was through the occasional photo or black market album. Their reaction to his 2003 visit is a mixture of frenzy and rapture; in interview after interview, what one fan calls the Beatles' 'gentle intervention' is credited with helping to bring down the whole Soviet system, simply because they represented a creativity and freedom that had been almost totally silenced. And that's all before McCartney plays 'Back in the U.S.S.R.,' which inspires a response that simply must be seen and heard to be believed.

Elsewhere, Macca and his superb band perform a variety of Beatles tunes, along with some highlights from his solo career and stint with Wings. Considering the dozens of classics in the Lennon-McCartney catalogue, the majority of them never performed live by the group, he could hardly go wrong. Still, the choices are almost unerring; along with 'Hey Jude,' 'Yesterday,' and 'Let it Be' are some unexpected treats (including 'Getting Better' and 'She's Leaving Home' from the Sgt. Pepper album, as well as 'Fool on the Hill,' 'I've Just Seen a Face,' and 'Two of Us'). And that's not all: additional footage from a show in St. Petersburg features 'Drive My Car,' 'Helter Skelter,' and a powerful medley of 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band' and 'The End.' The sound and visuals are good, and the extra features (including a brief parallel history of the Beatles and the U.S.S.R. in the '60s) are interesting. No, the Beatles will never reform. But Paul McCartney - Live in Red Square ain't a bad substitute. --Sam Graham

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Unwatchable
The concert seems like it was edited by a computer algorithm. The code is set to change shots 3 or 4 times per second. You need to pause the DVD to even see who is onstage.

I bought this DVD as an impulse after seeing Paul do one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Never again will I buy without checking the customer reviews first. Sometimes I put on the DVD and shut off the TV so that I can just listen to the music, but the annoying interviews keep interrupting the show.

What a waste. It is hard to believe that someone as phenomenal as Paul McCartney would release (unleash ?) such an awful product on his many fans. Do not, under any circumstances, buy this DVD. It will only give you a headache.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Concert
Very cool concert. What more can you say. If you like Paul, you'll like this concert.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Horrible Video Editing / Great Music
I do not believe there is a single video shot of Paul McCartney in this entire video that lasts for more than four seconds before it switches to some other band member, or more so, to the audience. This film is clearly more focused on the crowd and merely blends in extremely erratic video of Paul McCartney and his band. Also, although interesting, the commentary between each song does not allow the viewer to get into any kind of flow with the concert. This really feels more like a documentary than a concert film.

However, the music/audio aspect of the film is outstanding. Paul and his band perform the tunes to perfection. Again, unfortunately, the video editing of this film is (in my opinion) ineffective and not well-done. It would have been nice to have had a DVD option to view the film without the commentary between songs, but even more so, to have been able to view Paul's performance without the camera constantly switching angles and to different band members and the crowd.

I had the priveledge of seeing Paul McCartney live in Dallas, TX in November 2005 and it was truly one of the best concert performances I have ever seen. It is so disappointing that the "Paul McCartney in Red Square" film missed the mark in presenting Paul's performance in a cohesive and flowing way.

I am a huge, huge Beatles and Paul McCartney fan, but was truly disappointed in the video aspect of this concert film.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Good DVD, Could have been great! Use Your Remote as You Watch!!
Caution! Almost un-watchable without your remote! BUT, great if you can fast-forward. If you want a real "migraine" watch this one all the way through, without your remote. I counted 97 camera shot cutaways during "Baby I'm Amazed", and that's about average per song, back and forth from the audience to the band, back to the band, back to the audience, over and over and over. No music (as great as it is) can save this DVD! I've never seen anything like it in my life. For some odd reason, most of the reviewers on here don't seem to mind it. Yeah, the shots of Red Square are very beautiful, and the show is quite a spectacle....BUT. From what i see on Amazon, ALL of Paul's concerts follow the same format, "The Audience" (with Paul McCartney)

Another problem I have with it is, way too much dialogue on how the Beatles were responsible for the fall of communism. They could have talked about that for 5-10 minutes, and got it over with. All the boring dialog and shots of Paul at various kid's schools around town, riding his bike (illegally) with "golddigger Heather" through Red Square, got old real quick. I don't remember where he played two songs back to back without breaking away to some boring piece of re-hashed theory of the "fall of communism" factor. It's intersting to watch one time, but that's it. (Again, leave that remote in hand.) Really, this show is more a history lesson than concert.

On a positive note, 2 concerts for the price of one. The song selections are great, ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - I wanted so much to like this one....
Huge Beatles/McCartney fan here. When I read reviews on Amazon, I make sure to read the five star reviews along with the one or two star reviews. I like to get a real feeling of what I will possibly be purchasing. Interspersed with all the rave reviews for 'Paul McCartney - Live in Red Square' there is a smattering of reviewers who pan this DVD as 'unwatchable' and 'painful', to quote a couple of them, citing the constant switching of cameras as the main reason. The huge McCartney sycophants will give this 5 stars, regardless of the actual quality of the DVD, and those who dislike Paul for whatever reason are predisposed to giving bad reviews, so I suspected that the truth lie somewhere in the middle.

As someone who has sat through many music videos that feature unsettling camera switches every second or two, shots that nauseatingly zoom in and out at warp speed, and rapid-fire angle changes that cause headaches if watched for more than a few seconds at a time, I was hesitant to purchase this DVD when I read the reviews about the camera work, even though I am a Beatles freak and a huge McCartney fan. Luckily, I found this DVD at my local library and checked it out. As much as it pains me to say this, I must agree with those who have a major problem with the constant switching of cameras and the overall unwatchability of this concert.

What is it about the modern music video, and many of the television commercials nowadays, that feel the need to do this? I can only believe ... Read More
