Product Description: The Maxell Battery Backup Pack provides up to 20 hours of auxiliary battery power for iPod players from four AAA batteries for occasions when consumers expect to be using their players for long periods of time between recharging. It includes adapters for various size players and a belt clip for ease of portability.
Amazon.com Product Description: Ideal for outdoor activities, long road or backpacking trips, and any other extended period when a power source might be several hours (or days) away, this backup iPod battery pack keeps your music flowing throughout the afternoon and night. The pack connects to your iPod's 30-pin dock connector, with a built-in clip keeping it securely attached to your belt. Once attached, the backup battery unit delivers an extra 15 to 20 hours of playing time, far more than the iPod's integrated rechargeable battery. And should the backup battery start to run down--as revealed by the LED indicator--simply insert another four AA batteries (not included) and you're back to full strength. The backup battery is compatible with the iPod 3G, iPod 4G, iPod photo, iPod video, iPod nano, and iPod mini and carries a 90-day warranty against defects.

I'm become very skeptical about iPod battery units, I've tried more that have not worked than those that have. At first I thought this might be another dud, I plugged it in and got a message that recharging is not supported with the unit. I hit DISMISS, kept it connected and put on a movie. 45 minutes later there was no drop on the battery icon. So, you need to break this thing out before your tank runs dry, but that said it did the trick. The part where it works on conventional batteries was pretty smart, you could fly to Tokyo and watch movies the whole way. I held back one star just cause it will not recharge, realistically though that is a minor setback.

Just got back from France: the battery pack worked perfectly & still has the first four AA batteries.
The 'on' button can easily be bumped on in luggage; I'd suggest a piece of electrician's tape to keep it turned off if you are really 'out there'

I went to England. I wanted to take no AC chargers due to the expense and hassles of travel power adapters. I bought this for my iPod and it ROCKED! You gotta love the 7-11 School of Design. You can buy AA batteries almost anywhere in the world! I bought this, replaced the batteries only once over a 9 day trip and listened to the iPod for hours and hours. What a weight/space/aggravation saver!
