Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: The screenwriting/directing debut of veteran British stage and screen actor Charles Dance tells of a pair of Cornish spinsters (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) who discover a charismatic young Polish violin virtuoso castaway (Daniel Bruhl) on the beach below their home. The tale leads inexorably to tender romantic conflicts and a warm concert house finale. Composer Nigel Hess masterfully utilizes his background as Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company to conjure a score that evokes its quiet, emotional dignity via neo-classical orchestral arrangements that feature real life young virtuoso Joshua Bell on solo violin. Hess' intimate original compositions form a virtually seamless tapestry with the story's requisite classical repertory choices, which range from Massenet and Debussy to Bell's delightful variations on Paganini's "The Carnival of Venice." --Jerry McCulley

Absolutely the most beautiful music I have ever heard. Luddite that I am, would even consider getting an Ipod to carry it with me.

After watching the movie Ladies in Lavender I had to have the soundtrack. It is just beautiful and very soothing to listen to. Makes for wonderful background while having a dinner party or just to sit and read and have playing.

After nearly a lifetime of not particularly enjoying violin music, after hearing Joshua Bell's playing on the soundtrack of Ladies in Lavender, I've come to appreciate violin music, and can now also recognise the different kinds of violin I hear. Some wonderful compositions on this CD - Good on you Nigel Hess. This is a most valuable and loved addition to my CD library. Thanks Joshua for your sensitive playing. Gwen

Transporting, peaceful and joyous, the movie and music are gifts of love and glory from Joshua Bell.

Violin playing doesn't come any better than Joshua Bell, and it was his music which provided wonder to this lovely story. His virtuosity and sensitivity are both apparent, and is NOT just "background movie music" but can stand beautifully as a separate album. His "Meditation" rivals the best!
