Editorial Review:
Description: This award-winning motion picture is a must-see adaptation of Thomas Hardy's timeless tale! After being away at school, Grace (Emily Woof -- THE FULL MONTY, VELVET GOLDMINE) feels she's outgrown her rural hometown and childhood sweetheart, a simple woodsman named Giles (Rufus Sewell -- EXTREME OPS, A KNIGHT'S TALE). She longs to travel abroad with the rich widow Mrs. Charmond (Polly Walker -- 8 1/2 WOMEN, EMMA, ENCHANTED APRIL) and marries a handsome young doctor. But Grace soon learns that culture is no substitute for true love. Honored with awards at numerous international film festivals, the first-rate cast of THE WOODLANDERS brings this treasured tale to life!

Rating: - Better the second time around
The first time I watched this movie, it seemed choppy--as if some scenes were deleted. After reading the reviews posted here, I can see that was the case. I've watched it a couple of times since then and really came to appreciate the film, particularly the performances. Rufus Sewell and Emily Woof are excellent. I ached for poor Gracie! I do have issue, however, with the $26 price tag. I don't think I would pay that much for it. I was able to purchase a copy at a used bookstore for $7.99.
Rating: - Woodlanders not worth the money
I primarily got this video based on the actors, especially Rufus Sewell, and the review of the movie itself. After watching it, I have to say that the ending was really unsatisfying. I don't know if it was the ending written by Hardy or one created by the filmmakers, but it was a really anticlimatic. Don't pay $26 for this.
Rating: - yawn!
Since I have not read the novel, I can judge this piece merely as a film. And this is one of the most boring ones I've seen, although I adore costume drama. (Well, the three stars go to Mr. Sewell only.)
Rating: - Good, but I prefer a happier ending
Hopeless romantic that I am, I do like a happier ending than the one in this movie, but I still liked it. Good acting all around and the movie isn't very predictable, which is always a treat. I enjoy not knowing what's going to happen.
Rating: - very good movie!
If you are a period movie fan like I am you will enjoy this movie.
