Editorial Review:
Product Description: Tom Selleck stars in this television movie adaptation of Robert B. Parker's novel as New England police chief Jesse Stone. After a serious gig as a top homicide detective in Los Angeles, Stone settles in a small town along the coast of Maine where he leads a relatively simple life. In the predominantly crime-free town of Paradise, Stone tries to minimize the drama in his life by drinking heavily, avoiding his bitter ex-wife, and keeping his new, younger girlfriend at a safe distance. But things for Stone and the other inhabitants of Paradise are thrown into chaos when a dead body washes ashore, and a high school student confesses to being raped by not one, but several attackers. Drawing on his experience as a big city investigator, Stone must find the culprits before his peaceful town turns into the playground of a serial killer.

Tom Selleck does a great job at bringing the character from the book to the screen! If you are a fan of Tom Selleck, or the book, you will not be disappointed! I think Selleck is the perfect actor to play this part. Great story that leaves you wanting to watch all of the movies in this series!

The Jesse Stone "films", which are really CBS TV two-hour special recurring dramas, have been a big surprise in many ways. The production quality has been very high, the filming locations, in Nova Scotia, standing in for Maine, very scenic and atmospheric, the way in which the pulp genre characters and B-List former stars and character actors have been used has been keenly attuned to the needs of both Robert Parker's style and Tom Selleck's long established screen persona, the scripts have been lean and well crafted, and Tom Selleck has been wonderful, perfect, perhaps, as Jesse Stone. The first two instalments, with Viola Davis, were especially good. The score is wonderful -- is there any way to get that great music on CD?
However, since the exit of actress Viola Davis as Jesse's fellow cop, police station manager and conscience, and the arrival of the very different Kathy Baker, in a similar role, the series has taken a definite turn into late middle aged "Murder She Wrote" torpor. The edginess that made it alluring has waned, the supporting actors have become less notable, and the recurring business about Jesse's drinking, his shrink, his dog, his indifference to being fired from his "last chance" job as chief of police, and the calls from his ex-wife have all become a little more rote, and lifeless.
That said, there are some wonderful pulp genre elements here, and I guess I will keep watching. But they need to take stock and amp it back up a bit. It may be aimed at an older demographic, and that may even include me. But it's getting just a little too stolid, even for aging boomers with an affection for gruff but sensible Tom Selleck in a great third act role of a lifetime.

The 'Jesse Stone' series of movies are tailor-made for Tom Selleck's laid-back style. I love the pacing, tone, characters, stories, and locale. There is none of that frenetic fast cut nonsense; nor is there a pounding soundtrack or any shaky handheld camera work here -- just some very solid entertainment that belies its broadcast television roots.

The first in the Jesse Stone series. I have the series and find the story to be well written. Tom Selleck does a superb job of bringing this character to the screen. Selleck adds a strong dimension to Jesse and a real likableness. The stories maintain your interest and all are well directed and in good locations. The supporting cast adds to the story in supporting Jesse Stones character. If you like Tom Selleck, police mystery (not action) you will enjoy these stories.

I own all of the Jesse Stone movies. You can't go wrong with Tom Selleck or these movies. I love the small town aspect too. Selleck is great at playing us everyday people with all our faults and gifts.
PLEASE JUST DON'T STOP MAKING THE MOVIES YET!!
