Editorial Review:
Description: From producer Steven Bochco ('NYPD Blue,' 'L.A. Law,' 'Hill Street Blues') comes the first scripted television series set in a current, ongoing war involving the United States. Gritty, intense, evocative and emotional, 'Over There' takes you to the front lines of battle and explores the effects of war on a U.S. Army unit sent to Iraq on their first tour of duty, as well as the equally powerful effects felt at home by their families and loved ones.
A must-see show for all Americans, 'Over There' is not about politics or policies. It's a true-to-life depiction of our courageous soldiers—the everyday heroes who fight for freedom under extraordinary conditions.
Includes an exclusive behind the scenes featurette!
Amazon.com: The pilot episode of Steven Bochco's Over There is as riveting, unexpected, and shocking as the series premieres of the legendary producer's Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. The first television drama set in an existing war being waged by the United States, Over There concerns the first tour of duty for a young, U.S. Army unit sent to Iraq. Unlike any number of movies and TV shows starring middle-age actors portraying American fighting forces in past wars, Over There's combat soldiers look and act like the barely-out-of-high-school young adults (many of whom, in Over There, joined the military out of economic necessity) most of our real-life troops actually are.
Whatever one's feelings about the Iraq war, Bochco and co-writer and director Chris Gerolmo (Citizen X) cut through the politics to get to the individuals whose lives are on the line, who left behind families to find themselves in a most alien environment, fired upon for reasons they may not fully understand. Gerolmo does a superb job of showing us combat conditions in desert sandstorms, with rookie soldiers hanging tough under intense heat while insurgents fire from a distance at anything that moves. This is a new kind of war show, yet in many ways Over There embraces a few sentimental conventions, notably scenes in which the unit's members explain the origins of their nicknames ('Angel,' 'Dim,' 'Doublewide,' 'Mrs. B,' and more). In the Bochco tradition, when violence comes, it comes as a grievous surprise. --Tom Keogh

Rating: - Wish they never cancelled it.
I am in the Army myself, and thought this was a great series. I don't know why they cancelled it.
Anyhow, the first few episodes are my favorite, but later in the series they begin to stray from what made it so good. However, towards the end of the series they make it interesting again. I wish they never canceled the show; I prefer it over the Unit.
Rating: - Over There
I purchased both the pilot episode and the season DVD's for my son-in-law who is currently serving in the Marine Corp and is stationed in Iraq. He specifically asked me to find these and send them to him. He heard from someone else that these were an accurate account of what is going on "Over There".
Rating: - Love the movie but watch your orders!
I loved this TV show and was disappointed when they took it off the air. However, be VERY careful when ordering! I ordered both videos (the pilot and the one with the episodes) - since Amazon was offering it as a "package" deal for a cheaper price, I assumed that the pilot episode was not on the boxed set - WRONG! It is repeated on that boxed set, so you will set yourself back $10 if you get them both.
Rating: - Interpitation of 3ID
This show has been cancelled for quite some time; (thank god), and others should not use it as their "reference" on what goes on over here in Iraq. Yes, the show has so-called portrayed 3ID during OIF III; however, 3ID was NOT like that. We don't establish ridiculous nicknames for Soldiers, as well has having a Sergeant that actually will get away with disrespecting their peers as well as doing nothing but demeaning his subordinates. In the 3ID of all divisions, they would not tolerate it; we're currently deployed now, and I was with 3ID also during OIF III. This was a disgrace. The only true fact of this show, that actually shows the reality of it, is the Soldier's wife that had cheated on him the minute he left; unfortunately that does happen. But everything else? Come on. This show was absolutely ludicrus. I'm glad it was cancelled, hopefully because our CG at the time was highly offended by it. 3ID is NOT a young division; the official reviewer of this show should have done their history.

Rating: - Loved it
Heard about this show and decided to get the pilot: loved it!
This way you get some idea what it's like for the troops over there. It might not be completely like real life, but then again which tv show is, but it definitely makes for some fun time.
Got the whole series as well, shame they cancelled the show.
