Amazon.com Product Description: Take intense gaming action with you wherever you roam with the Toshiba Satellite P35-S605 notebook PC--a true gamer's machine. It features a brilliant 17-inch TruBrite screen and built-in Harman Kardon speakers with SRS TruSurround XT--perfect for a cinema-like experience when watching DVD movies. It also features a hyper-threaded Mobile Pentium 4 processor, 100 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), dual-layer, multi-format DVD burner, integrated 54g wireless connectivity with support for Atheros SuperG technology, and Windows XP Home edition.
The Basics - Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is a above average in size for notebook PCs, and its capacity is a welcome size for such a multimedia-centric notebook.
- Processor: This notebook is powered by the 3.46 GHz, hyper-threaded Intel Mobile Pentium 4 processor 552, which rests at the top of its class in terms of speed (as of June 2005). It provides near-desktop PC performance for your notebook and helps to conserve battery life. It has a 533 MHz front-side bus and 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
A hyper-threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking. - Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (2 x 256 MB, PC2700, 333 MHz DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
- CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R-DL, 8x/4x for both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also provides CD control buttons (play, stop, skip backward, skip forward).
Screen, Graphics and Sound The P35-S605 has a 17-inch XGA display w with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio, making it perfect for viewing widescreen format movies. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature and 200 cd/m2 brightness rating. Video and graphics are powered by the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP card, which delivers strong 3D rendering and shares memory with the processor's RAM memory. The integrated audio card (Realtek ALC250) provides 16-bit stereo sound via the built-in Harman Kardon speakers as well as SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots The P35-S605 has an integrated Atheros 802.11b/g wireless-LAN that supports Atheros SuperG technology, which uses packet-bursting, fast frames, on-the-fly data compression/decompression, and dual-channel bonding to enhance throughput to double that of 802.11g. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including both super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire options: - 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video out
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)

Rating: - Toshiba no more!
I thought I'd bought a good product, but then odd vertical lines began appearing on the screen. They multiplied over time until now there must be twenty or more of them grouped at two and a half inch intervals across the screen. It's like looking through prison bars. When I searched the Internet I could not find a possible cause for it, but I did learn that this was a fairly common occurrence for this model (P35-S605) and that Toshiba charged $600.00 to correct it. In addition, one source I read that had had the repair done said it did not stay repaired, that the vertical lines reappeared in time. I have not had the overheating problem, but I think I'm just lucky. There are two fans on the bottom of the unit that draw air up into the laptop. One fan blows directly across the CPU into a thin-veined copper heat sink; the second fan blows the air directly into a second thin-veined copper heat sink. Over time dust accumulates on the interior faces of the heat sinks and reduces their cooling ability to point that the unit begins overheating and randomly shutting down. I work in IT and found a Web site that showed me how to disassemble the laptop to clean the heat sinks, but it is not a procedure for the faint of heart as it requires complete disassembly of the laptop. I was listening to Kim Komando's radio show and she said that, in her opinion, one weakness of the P35 laptop was that the CPU was not designed for a laptop, that it was desktop processor that had been stuck in a laptop. A fellow IT worker ... Read More
Rating: - Constant overheating/ No Help from customer service
We had to send this laptop back 4 times because of overheating issues. They had to replace the hard drive, dvd drive, and cooling fans. Customer service constantly gave me the run around, waiting on hold for literally hours, lost connection at least 4 times (after waiting for an hours.) I will never buy another Toshiba Product. This was the worst customer service and product I have ever experienced.
Rating: - Fantastic!
I've had this Satellite P35-S605 for over a year now & haven't had any problems at all! This is one powerful portable machine!!!
Rating: - Good Deal on Big Unit
I bought my P35 a year ago and have been pleasantly satisfied. Good quality, good vision, good performance. And excellent price ($900 at Sam's) when compared to other big, bold notebooks.
The only drawback is the 10 pounds of hardware (which I knew when I bought it) makes for very difficult travel.

Rating: - A machine that does everything!!... that i need though
I am 13years old graphic design lover and this lappy got me everything that I need.... well actually daddy upgraded the RAM into 2Gb PC3200 for my hobby. Dad also installed the Japanese MUI pack.. (maybe to let me know that I am a Japanese kid that living outside Japan)
PROS : EVERYTHING.... I dont follow latest games though.. As long as my graphic softwares run well then it's more than enough.
CONS : minimum connection!! no parallel, no bluetooth, no IR, no PS/2, just 3 USBs, and just 1 PCMCIA Slot.... arghhgh! The amount of memory shared with the VGA is 128mb and cannot be downgraded. I wonder why?
I often heard that this machine does no good when it comes to overheating..
well isnt every lappy does? my family have Dynabook pentium 3 mobile, two centrinos (Toshiba-Fujitsu), a centrino duo (HP), and a celeron-m (COMPAQ).. they are much more overheating than this giant.
Besides, before being bought the lappy, dad already anticipated everything. He bought lappy cooler (since no lappy that is not overheat. they are all overheating.)
and thinking that this lappy to on your lap is quite nonsense eventhough it's called lappy. This lappy is a desktop-replacement, it should NOT be placed on bed (since nobody puts desktop PCs on bed) either! Just care this machine as a DESKTOP!
