LOVE HAS KEPT THEM TOGETHER! In 1976, Toni Tennille and Daryl Dragon hosted their own ABC-TV variety series - the CAPTAIN & TENNILLE show, a mix of music, comedy and guest stars. Only running one year, the duo opted out of another season as they felt somewhat torn between doing a weekly TV show and their recording career. Being accomplished musicians first and foremost, the show ended. Dick Clark took over the production for the last half of the season, which meant more C&T music as well as a diverse list of musical guests. Now, nearly 30 years since it originally aired, Captain & Tennille can do that to you one more time...this time on DVD!
DISC 1 begins with the first show from September 1976. Also included are C&T song favorites LONELY NIGHT and SHOP AROUND, plus Toni duets with John Travolta! Featured guests Penny Marshall, Bob Hope, Ron Howard, Leonard Nimoy and Andy Griffith add to the mix. Did we mention the Bionic Watermelon or Masterjoke Theatre?
DISC 2 - It's 1977 and the Captain & Tennille perform tributes to Neil Sedaka, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and the Carpenters. TV’s original Charlie’s Angels drop by, as do Tony Randall, Ed McMahon, The Sylvers, Jim Stafford, Muhammad Ali and other special guests. Heard any good HAT JOKES lately?
DISC 3 features some production numbers…and Toni just CAN'T STOP DANCIN’! Other music highlights include guests Ann & Nancy Wilson in HEART, David Gates and BREAD, RUFUS with Chaka Khan and an amazing duet featuring Toni with Dionne Warwick. Special appearances by Don Knotts, Vincent Price and George Burns round out the classic variety lineup. EXTRAS: Some fun bonus material, including Captain & Tennille’s national TV debut on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, more C&T performances, a little Broddy Bounce, a few Muskrat sightings and other surprises! It's like Captain & Tennille never really said goodbye!

Rating:  - The days of VARIETY SHOWS of everybody!
Back in the 70's just about anyone hot in music got their own variety show or, at least one shot special(The Starland Vocal Band did, remember them?). John Denver got a series,Sonny and Cher, Tony Orlando and Dawn and...The Captain and Tennille only after what was a meteoric rise to the top of the charts with just a few songs. When seeing this, one remembers that this was what was regarded as major-rated entertainment of the time. Entire families would gather to watch these. The comedy was lame, the glitz was amazing even when you realize this was the polyester 70's. Toni Tennille was a babe-major of the time in her own way. Apparently, between some faltering ratings, and C&T's realization they didn't want to be hosting a show and instead doing music, the show faded away rather quickly. It was an amazingly simple time when fun was on three networks only and no DVDs or VHS...
Rating:  - Great DVD -- Excellent Music!
This may not be as exciting to non-Captain & Tennille fans (although LONG awaited by diehard C&T fans), but you will find this set to be surprisingly entertaining. Sure, some of the comedy is flat, some of the song choices questionable; but there is so much else to like on this -- and, in particular, Toni Tennille's magnetic, charismatic and, I daresay, magical personality. There is something so winning about her, she makes you feel happy! As some others have written below, you will discover that Daryl "Captain" Dragon is not a 'stick-in-the-mud' as the media has generalized his persona through the years. Sure, there are times when he's quiet, times when the comedy he was given doesn't work; but plenty of other places where he's quite funny -- and you can't beat his musicianship (it is reported that he recorded all of the tracks for the show in his studio the week of and sometimes the night prior to the actual taping).
Some of the real highlights are the duets (or quartets?), such as "You're All I Need (To Get By)" with C&T and Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr.; or Toni with Dionne Warwick on "He's Gone" (their version of Hall & Oates "She's Gone); and more.
I don't mean to go out of the bounds of a review of product, but I have to make one comment regarding one of the folks posting below (from April '07) that Dragon & Tennille have "gone right wing" and all the rest about the troops and Bush. People tend to forget that politically the Seventies was defined by the Nixon scandal and its resultant cynicism. However, that didn't mean that people couldn't have fun, listen to goodtime music, or be socially idealistic. Of course, not everyone was so open to something better than what was; back in 1976 I remember an aunt of mine deride a white recording artist for singing like a black person--although "black" wasn't precisely the word she used, and she wasn't referring to Elvis. She was, of course, referring to Toni Tennille, a native Southerner whose husky voice sounded, well, "black." Critics didn't seem to be much impressed, though; she wasn't "authentic."
Captain & Tennille did however enjoy considerable pop chart success in 1975-76, and their gimmick was tailor-made for a "straight" Sonny & Cher knock-off. Today, people might be bemused about how popular the show was during the single season it aired; but the music was memorable Seventies pop fodder (all lip-synced), the comedy bits were often actually amusing (who knew that Leonard Nimoy could be a riot?) and Tennille put her voice to good use, particularly when applied to R&B classics. Daryl Dragon (the Captain) was not the hanger-on people may believe he was; he was an inventive keyboard player and droll in his own unassuming way. The only caution is that there is not one, but two cringe-inducing video takes of "Muskrat Love" in the bonus section of this three DVD collection.

Rating: - Great Music, Bad Comedy
The Captain and Tennille as an act, are extremely likeable people. They are very talented musicians (whether you prefer their particular BRAND of music or not), but they weren't cut out for the 70's variety show format. It's probably why the show only lasted a year. The skits are uncomfortable and dull (we can place blame on the writing as well). Sonny and Cher and Donny and Marie best pulled off the comedy AND music routines involved with the typical variety show. The good thing is that there's quite a bit more music on the C&T shows then there are comedy routines. That's a good thing. I think Toni has a terrific voice, and I still enjoy checking into their website once a month and reading Toni's weekly blog. Great, down to earth, untouched by hollywood and its whackiness couple......that's why they couldn't quite pull it off.
Rating: - Nice but a bit dated and the comedy sucks
I like this set even though the comedy is mediocre to downright awful. The best part of the set is perhaps the nostalgia one feels for the 1970s. I enjoyed watching the cast of "What's Happening" on the show in addition to other stars of the 70s.
The Captain aka Daryl Dragon has the personality of a tree stump, and I can't believe that acting or other lessons wouldn't have helped him. Perhaps Tennille would've had a better career if she had a male partner with half a breath.
