Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome as ever
Talk about three musicians who play all that the instruments can give! Getty Lee has got to be the most adept bassist ever; he plays it like a guitar, not a thump-thump background only instrument. Liveson is one of the most underated rock guitarists. His versatility is amazing. Peart, god, what to say about THE best drummer ever. And it all goes together, the actual play of three (and more when keyboard comes in) instruments along with vocals which explain the music, while the music returns the favor to the vocals, especially on this vivid DVD.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This deluxe set is comprehensive!
Rush: R30 special edition - I listened to a lot of Rush between the ages of 12 and 17. In real time terms, that meant the "Moving Pictures," "Signals," "Grace Under Pressure," and "Power Windows" albums. Of course, I also listened to the local classic rock station, which meant that I heard all of the albums before that as well, including Side A of "2112 many many many times. And since those days I can count the number of Rush fans I have met on one hand. Having gone many years without paying them much attention, I was happy to see that they'd put out this cool set: it's a live CD and a live DVD of their 30th anniversary tour. There is also an additional DVD that shows a lot of archival footage, which means you get to see Rush haircuts and stage gear throughout the decades; the set also comes with two guitar picks, one signed by Geddy Lee and one signed by Alex Lifeson. I use these picks to play guitar. Rock and roll!!! The live DVD was filmed in Frankfurt in 2003. It starts out with a weird animated sequence that is full of either three-part objects or motifs from their album covers - the dalmation from Signals appears both solo and in a herd of charging dalmations (?!?). Those Rush guys sure have a wacky sense of humour. Some of the parts were quite Monty Python Terry Gilliam-esque, which is nice, especially the segueway from the Starman "whoa, sorry dude" to the man with the bowler hat from the Hemispheres album cover. Albums covers include Caress of Steel man, Power Windows kid, Fly By Night owl, ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - From the Vaults
Some great footage of early Rush from Fly by Night, Farewell to Kings - but I'm pretty sure it's dubbed, though the dubbing is high quality, i.e. you might not know it's dubbed unless you knew the original album material well. "Circumstances" isn't dubbed I don't think, nor was the recent re-make of Closer to the Heart.. Geddy was straining to hit some of those high notes, but you could see awe in the eyes of some of the guest stars playing with them when Alex goes into his solo.. he never sounded better. The pre-concert sound check of up of Spirit of the Radio isn't dubbed obviously, nor is it long at only a minute or so. It's great to see shots of these 3 players from different intervals in their career. "Freewill", while in the vault, is not actually ancient footage - 2003 - washing machines in background! It's cool to see, but i'd have loved to more good footage (if any exists) from earlier 'man-in-the-star' days.

One of the real gems from the vaults is some seriously old footage (with quality to match) of 'finding my way' - no dubbing here - this is early Rush in all their raw glory. The quality is a notch up from a garage recording, but I'd rather it this way to see the real thing anyday over a quality dub. This is vintage Rush, although i'm pretty sure Neil and not Rutsy is on the drums here. Alex's got his Jimmy Page steps down, and Geddy's belting it out like a punk rocker - looking pretty mean! Another treat is La Villa Strangiato from Hemispheres days which is also ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - AND you get guitar picks
In a popular mood, Rush has been releasing live albums following each tour over the last 10 years, something a lot of bands seem to do (if they're almost unsure of whether they'll continue).

Cynics might deride the appearance of yet another double-live album in April 2008 (from the Snake's & Arrows tour of '07), but they need not buy the material, then. This is a deluxe edition of the R30 tour that went around in '04, featuring plenty of classics plus tracks from the cover album they released at the time. This edition has 2 DVDs of live material (a single, complete Germany show), bonus archive performance material, interviews, numberous Easter eggs, the full performance on CD (very nice), plus a nice book, plus a couple of autograph guitar picks, which look cool enough as they sit in the fold-out DVD box for eternity. If I'm paying for another Rush live DVD set, then yes, please give me the show on CDs, and throw in some picks.

This show definitely sounds like the R30 shows, which I thought were mixed differently, especially Lifeson's guitars which were ripping on every song. I could be crazy, though, or listening to too much Rush, but it seemed like a more stripped-down, rocking Rush on that tour. That sound is fully captured here, and the real treat is being able to listen to the show on disc. Great job on the set.

Since Rush now has numerous generations of fans and devotees, and new ones every time the elders take the youngsters to yet another tour, this ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My only complaint...
...is that it's almost "too perfect". Amazing production. Even my wife really enjoyed watching it, and she's the first to roll her eyes when I start air drumming to Rush music in the car.
