"Partners"
Gay Romance
Amos Lassen
From the blurb on the jewel case cover of the DVD of "Partners", one might think that this is a movie that makes fun of gay men but I was pleasantly surprised as I watched the movie that this was not the case at all.
The storyline is quite simple. An enterprising lawyer, acting on a report that a female colleague is about to be promoted to partner status, plays up the established rumor that he is gay in order to better his chances at beating the competition.
What I really found interesting in the film is that it shows how far we have come. A couple of years ago I do not think that a major studio like Lion's Gate" would have considered releasing a film about a straight man who pretends to be gay to get a promotion.
Dave is straight and has a gay roommate who is also his best friend. When Dave decides to "come out", he is completely accepted by his co-workers and his family. He does not feel the need to "act gay" and he has no trouble telling people that he is "gay".
Because the tables are turned at his prestigious law firm where a case of sexual discrimination is to be assigned, Dave (Jay Harrington) and Katherine (Julie Bowen) who were once lovers, go against each other to get the case. The assignment will almost surely guarantee a partnership in the law firm. There is a young pretty girl, however, who is part of the case, Lucy. Lucy has eyes for Dave but thinks he is gay and she feels that this ... Read More
Rating: - Original PARTNERS on dvd please !!!
My hopes were heightened when I typed in the word
partners and saw that it was finally out on dvd.
I was crushed to see that it was not the 1982
version with John Hurt and Ryan O Neal.
This is just a bothersome piece of fluff with
acting that would make John Hurt cringe.
Don't waste your money or your time on this one.
Rating: - A Clever Adult Comedy
At last, a clever adult comedy about adult situations.
I found myslef laughing out loud as the different characters went though self discovery and self-disclosure. It was refreshing to see the characters honestly and humorously re-evaluating themselves.
This is worth seeing.
Rating: - Pleasant but trite
The movie has a very promising start, with good acting and high production values. The only problem is that about half way through we know exactly what is going to happen at the end. If you don't mind this kind of predictability in movies - you will enjoy PARTNER(S)!
The movie is not earmarked for a gay audience - it is a story with gay elements intended for a straight audience. And therefore it falls between two chairs.
If Jonathan had to do more "gay" things to prove he was in fact gay - the movie would have had more credibility, but I suppose the producers were afraid that might have repelled their prospective straight audiences.
An original feature to the story was the two assistants at the law firm debating straight and gay traits. Very funny.
This DVD is not bad at all - just predictable. NO extra features (just trailers)
Rating: - Rent Something Good Like Dukes of Hazard Instead...
I can sum this movie up using 20 words or less. Way too predictable of a story line with potential to be funny but instead falls flat on its face. See, 19 words, however, I didn't completely pan this flick with just one star but instead decided to bump it up to two stars due to the fact that Julie Bowen is smoking hot and provided just enough eye candy to keep me from ripping the DVD right out from the machine and blowing it up with an M80. My advice, take the $4.00 rental fee you would have paid to see this movie and just send it right to me as an advance thank you for saving you the time and frustration of having to sit through this train wreck, or you may want to send me the $50.00 replacement fee you would have been charged from taking out your twelve gage to use this piece of garbage as skeet shooting practice.
