You’re never too old to chance romance!
Celebrated author Sir Cecil Warburton (Rex Harrison – My Fair Lady) is thrilled to read the obituary of an old rival, the dull and respectable man who married Lady Evelyn (Wendy Hiller – Separate Tables), the lovely girl he once kissed – and should have married himself – fifty years ago.
Desirous of female companionship and feeling that this is his last chance to live life to the full, Sir Cecil is determined to woo and marry Evelyn before it’s too late. With singleness of purpose on his side and his devoted, but dubious butler, Hawkins (Cyril Cusack – Far and Away), at his back, Sir Cecil sets his sights on the unsuspecting Lady Evelyn – who is in for the courtship of her life! approx. 77 mins. col.
Special Features: Cast Profiles
Amazon.com: Short and sweet at 77 minutes, this 1983 made-for-TV adaptation of William Douglas Home's play is delightfully cast, with Rex Harrison, who originated the role of Henry Higgins in the musical My Fair Lady, and Wendy Hiller, the original Liza Doolittle in the 1938 classic Pygmalion. Recreating his stage role, Harrison is at his fussy best as the self-absorbed Cecil, a celebrated author now in his 'dotage' and desirous of 'a second spring.' His spirits are rejuvenated by news of the death of a romantic rival, and he sets out to strike 'while the iron is hot' to woo his widow, Evelyn (Hiller), the woman Cecil let get away 50 years before. 'I haven't lived, not yet,' Cecil tells Hawkins (Cyril Cusack), his faithful, albeit perhaps too attached butler (Cyril Cusack). Hiller is the charming embodiment of a woman who Cecil aptly describes as 'everything the doctor ordered in one lovely girl.' But Evelyn, just returned from her husband's funeral, is wary of the impetuous Cecil. Over the course of an afternoon and a libation-fueled evening, they talk and reminisce, to the increasing disapproval of Hawkins. But is Cecil 50 years too late? The pleasure of Harrison and Hiller's company more than compensates for the somewhat slim plot. Like the titular bird, The Kingfisher is 'a lovely little creature.' --Donald Liebenson

Rating: - A true privilege
For those of us who did not have the opportunity to see Rex Harrison in the theater, being able to watch him in this particular movie is truly a privilege. Anyone who appreciates good acting that can take a simple script to a higher level will enjoy The Kingfisher.
Rating: - The Kingfisher Film
Strong acting from both main characters, particularly from Rex Harrison - but the narrative and purpose of the film never really excite the viewer. It seems to ramble along with characters coming in and exiting as needed. Interesting and not disturbing but not a film you'd rave about to friends saying that they must see it. If you're into old films with predictable lines and action capitalising on the skills of well-known actors, then see it - but you probably won't watch it more than on two wet non-consecutive evenings spread some time apart.
Rating: - Best acting I've seen in years.
The Kingfisher is a story about love never gained at youth but attempted to be won in old age. The dialog makes you happy you can understand English. It's a well-written story. The acting is perfect. There was a twist that I thought diverted from the general tone of the movie...so I'm actually giving it 4 3/4 stars.
Rating: - Memories are made of this!
When I first commented on this movie, I hadn't actually seen it. Now I have to really recommend it more strongly.
I saw Rex Harrison & Claudette Colbert in this play on Broadway - what a thrill. Dame Wendy Hiller will also be great in the role, so I'm excited even though I haven't seen the movie yet. See Dame Wendy in Pygmallion (the original G.B. Shaw play before music and a softer ending made it into My Fair Lady) and you'll know why I'm so pleased to find this. I'll have to add an opinion after viewing later.
And I've always loved Cyril Cusack - one of the great old British actors.Pygmalion
Rating: - A joy for the viewing
Years ago this film was a special on HBO. I recorded it....a couple times even. I never tired of the acting, the writing, the visual delight. These actors know how to act and knowing what is coming up, each time I see it, is part of the fun. I wore out 2 tapes I had made and for several years I tried to find a copy. When they finally put it on DVD no one was happier than I was.
Everyone should treat themselves to this film. It is a prize.
