Editorial Review:
Description: Comedy superstar Gene Wilder goes from geel to sheik in this side-splitting story of one man's quest to become The World's Greatest Lover.
When frustrated movie studio mogul Adolph Zitz (Dom DeLuise) announces a talent search for a romantic leading man to rival the great Rudolph Valentino, thousands of hopefuls decend upon Hollywood - including Rudy Valentine (Wilder), a neurotic baker from Milwaukee who knows as little about romance as he does about acting. But when his wife, Annie (Carol Kane), leaves him for the real Valentino, Rudy goes to outrageous (and hilarious) lengths to win the role of a lifetime... and win back the love of his life.

Rating: - Early Gene Wilder Comedy
If you're a Wilder fan, you'll want to see this one that he wrote and starred in early in his career. Good to see but not as satisfying as later comedies.
Rating: - A Wilder Time at the Movies
I remember fondly seeing this as a kid on a double-bill with the moonshine comedy "Thunder and Lightning"(check it out). Revisiting it again after thirty years I have to say it still holds up. I remember it came out around Christmas of '77 about the same time Wilder's mentor Mel Brooks' "High Anxiety" came out and the criticism of "The World's Greatest Lover" unfairly compared the two films. For sure the laughs are scattershot but I found more hits than misses. Wilder the director has imbued his film with great period detail. Wilder displays his inimatable neurotic comic brio here. The always solid Carol Kane is charming. Aside from Brooks stalwart Dom DeLuise Wilder employs some good veteran comic talent here(Carl Ballantine, Billy Sands, Ronnie Graham, Fritz Feld). Don't go into this with high expectations and you'll enjoy it. On a final trivial note, the actress portraying Wilder's reading partner, Candy Azzara, was cast as the original Gloria in the pilot for "All in the Family".
Rating: - Passable Wilder(barely
A fair Gene Wilder, but not in the group of great G. Wilder flicks. ONce in a while a top movie star gets miscast in a role that borders on disaster. Wilder does his best but the movie story was beyond salvation. I.m not sure any other actor could have moved the rating above mediocre. For sure, this is a movie that should never have been made. If yo see it once, you won't go back for seconds ?
Rating: - World's Greatest Lover.....just so-so
I'm 22. Huge Gene Wilder fan. Very excited to get this as I love many of Wilder's films. This is ok--not great. To honest there are moments where the movie just felt plain weird. Perhaps the best way to describe is that the movie feels dated. The comedy and style of acting during certain moments--I was not accustomed to. There were many great laughs throughout the movie, which Wilder wrote himself. But it starts to trail off by the end of the movie.
If you like Gene Wilder...you should get this movie. But it ain't gonna be laughing on the floor kind of stuff.
Rating: - goofy but funny
this is one of my all time favorite movies. It is simple but funny.Gene Wilder is hysterical as is Carol Kane. She is almost as funny as she is in "the Princess Bride" .The premise is simple but the cast is amazing.A very young Danny Devitto,Dom Deluise and other comedy geniues make appearances in this very light farce.
