Editorial Review:
Product Description: Melatonin is a metabolic hormone made in the pineal gland, retina, and intestines. Melatonin is released into the blood stream by the pineal gland (which resides in the brain) to set your bodys biological clock and initiate sleep. Darkness stimulates the pineal gland and causes it to produce more melatonin. Day light stops your bodys production of melatonin. Melatonin helps to promote healthy sleep patterns.* Melatonin also protects cells from free radical damage, and directs the release of growth and sex hormones.* Vitamin B6 plays an important role in brain chemistry and nervous system function.* *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

I personally have had problems with insomnia for a few months now, and before I could visit my physician and get a prescription for something stronger this helped me relax and get to bed sooner. My problem was that I was waking up in the middle of the night and my mind would race and I could not get back to sleep, and unfortunately this medicine did not help with that. It is a great value for the tablet count and I would recommend it to anyone having minor sleep problems related to stress, but if it lasts for an extended period of time something stronger prescribed by a doctor may be the route you may have to go as I did.
Also, as opposed to other melatonin products, this one is a bit more bitter and not as sweet when they melt in your mouth. Not the worst taste ever, but bitter and not like candy.

I don't think this is working well for me. I've had much better luck with Natrol 5 mg. Those seem to help me fall asleep faster. I've been taking this brand for a couple months and I don't notice any difference between nights that I take it and nights that I do not.

Due to menopausal symptoms, for past 5 months have had trouble going to sleep and staying asleep. Taking Shifts Melatonin Plus I fall asleep within a half hour of taking the tablet and sleep soundly for 1 hour. After that, I do wake up hourly, as I had before, but go back to sleep with less trouble. I have very vivid and sometimes very strange dreams when taking this drug. I do wake up slightly groggy but the grogginess goes away fairly quickly. I have only been taking Shiff's Melatonin Plus for about a week now. I will continue on and see what happens. It has worked better than any other over the counter remedy has yet.

I've always had an incredibly hard time getting to sleep. It always takes hours of laying the dark. Some nights I can lay awake for 6-7 hours before falling asleep around sunrise.
I've tried any number of things to help with the transition from being awake to being asleep. Lunesta works pretty well for me, but I don't like to take it all the time. It leaves me tired, and sometimes feeling a bit sad in the morning. It can also get pretty expensive.
I've tried many melatonin products over the years with mixed, but generally unsatisfactory, results. Sometimes it feels like they (might) help (a little) with quality of sleep, but mostly I'm left wondering, and eventually stop bothering to take them.
I recently decided to give melatonin a try again, and bought this stuff (Schiff Melatonin Plus) at my local Costco (where it cost 50% more than the current amazon price, grrr!).
I took one tablet that evening, sucking it like a hard candy until it disolved. It has no taste, so it's a bit like sucking a chalk tablet, which doesn't bother me, personally.
As I was sucking on it, I got curious to see what kind of reviews it might have. I found the amazon reviews via google, and started reading the same page you are now.
Not more than fifteen minutes later, I found myself yawning, realized I was having trouble focusing on the review I was reading, walked over to lay down in bed wondering if this could actually be happening (I'm NEVER anything but sharp and wide awake at that hour), and the next thing I knew, I was waking up the next morning, feeling like I'd had a fairly decent night's sleep.
Since then, I've taken it every night, right before bed (about 10 days now). I haven't had results as dramatic as the first night (though I keep hoping!), but I do feel a small, but noticeable difference in my level of relaxation, and it does seem like I'm falling asleep a bit faster.
If you decide to try it, disolve it in your mouth right at bedtime, or chew it.
Can't say if it will work for you or not, but for myself, I'm sold.
