Call it Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The College Years or Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Boys, but the horror series Supernatural delivers some of the most satisfying small-screen scares in recent memory. The premise is deceptively simple: brothers Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki from Gilmore Girls and Jensen Ackles, both appealing) travel the darker corners of the American landscape in search of their father, who's gone missing while hunting the malevolent forces that lead to the death of their mother. In the course of their search, the siblings encounter a host of otherworldly creatures, including vampires, ghosts, and witches, as well as such distinctly American phenomena as the urban-legend favorite the Hook ('Hookman'), monsters from Native American mythology ('Wendigo'), and fearful figures from children's games ('Bloody Mary'). Supernatural's integration of elements from American pop culture and folklore, combined with its skilled cast and crew (creator/co-writer Erik Kripke delivered 2005's Boogeyman, while director/executive producer David Nutter is a veteran of The X-Files and Millennium), and better-than-average attempts at atmosphere and suspense place the series well above the other spookshow programs that arrived on networks at about the same time (Invasion, Night Stalker), and should hold considerable appeal for fans of frightful fare.

The six-disc set contains all 22 episodes of the debut season, with commentary by Ackles and Padalecki on 'Phantom Traveler' and Nutter, Kripke, and producer Peter Johnson on the pilot episode; two making-of documentaries (one on the show itself, and the other on its stars), as well as a brace of unaired scenes and a gag reel round out the set. For those with DVD-ROM capabilities, the set also includes a link to a web site which offers a sneak preview at season 2 and the pilot script, among other bonus features. --Paul Gaita

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Original, hilarious, sad, complex.
I don't usually watch a lot of TV, but many acquaintances of mine ranted and raved about this show, and I, humoring them, watched the first season. And I was hooked. I watched the second season the next week, and the third the week after that. Just yesterday I watched the PHENOMENAL season three finale.

This show is, quite frankly, amazing. It encompasses a shockingly broad range of emotions, from comedy, with Dean Winchester's devil-may-care wit; to sadness, with Sam Winchester's shock at the loss of his girlfriend, and the lust of revenge that changes his attitude through the season. It's amazing how each episode feels like a scary movie; I actually sit at the edge of my seat each time, biting my nails anxiously, until the end credits begin to roll. And the classic rock soundtrack doesn't hurt, either. Who doesn't like a little Blue Oyster Cult now and then?

I sincerely hope that this show has many more seasons. This series can attract all audiences, whether you're a fan of horror, comedy, or drama. I highly recommend watching this.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent series full of action, humor and drama!
I rented a few episodes of Supernatural thinking that it might be okay. I was greatly surprised to find it more than okay. Much more. The premise is interesting and the creatures they fight are fleshed out nicely in each episode. It's genuinely scary, but rises far above simple horror entertainment. The characters are three dimensional, with issues and emotions that seem very real in spite of the fantastical context of the series. The chemistry between Ackles and Padalecki is excellent. They play so well off each other, you'd swear they were brothers in real life too. There's a lot of fun, witty banter and great pop culture references. The music is awesome and perfectly matches the ambience of the show. It pretty much has everything I'm looking for in a series- action, drama, and humor. The only thing it lacks is romance. There's a few one episode love interests but I'd rather see something more ongoing. But that's a minor quibble and I can understand how fitting in a long term romance would be difficult given the way the show's layed out. Anyway, I highly recommend this series. I bought the first and second season without even having seen all the episodes!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great show
this has got to be one of the best tv shows I have ever watched, and the only one that has truely scared me at times. I love it and don't EVER want it to go off the air. Jensen Ackles is the reason I started watching it, I've loved him in everything I've seen him in, and now I can't stop. The two brothers and the way they interact is amazing. I don't know what other actors could carry a tv show with just 2 main characters. They don't even need to be around any other recurring characters to tell a story. It's great and I recommend it for everyone. It might scare some small children though, as the Bloody Mary episode had me not wanting to look in a mirror for a week. Buy it and watch it over and over again. I have.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - SPOOKALICIOUS!!!!!!!
Normally I'm not one for scarey shows or movies, but there's something about this series that makes me want to watch it. Sure, Ackles & Padalecki make it fun to watch, but what keeps me watching is how they bring urban legends & sci-fi together. I really enjoy watching this show at night, with the lights off, and no one else around.
