Editorial Review:
Product Description: The film is based on a true story of the 9th company during the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan in the 1980's. Young Soviet Army recruits are sent from a boot camp into the middle of the war in Afghanistan. The action is not like a boot camp at all. It is very bloody and dirty. The 9th company is defending the hill 3234. They are hopelessly calling for help. But help never comes.

takes them right from the bus station in their home town, through training, then to the afghan war. Sound work was done in the UK, to make it extra high quality. Subtitles are well done, and a blessed relief from the curse of badly dubbed foreign movies. Equipment depicted is of course totally accurate ;-) It's one of those films like Das Boot that make you root for the guys on "the other side". Sad / funny / violent / excellent.

When I first pulled the DVD out of the box, I was horrified because the cover was written entirely in Russian. I was scared that there wouldn't be any subtitles, and when I popped the disk in, the menu was in Russian. I felt my way around and eventually found the English subtitles, which was a relief. The movie itself is pretty good. I'm big into military stuff, and this movie provides a perspective on the Afghan-Soviet War that isn't really seen in America. We know the American perspective, and to some extent, the Taliban's perspective, but this provides a Soviet side to the story that is lacking from many history books. While by no means definitive, 9th Company humanizes the Soviets and shows that the Russian and American soldiers have a lot more in common than we have been led to believe.

I was introduced to this film while stationed in Korea. I have a very limited experience with Russian Cinema and this is a movie that is comparable to the type of war films we produce in the US. This is different in a way in that it is very realistic regading the tone and feeling of the movie, not a happy one. The Soviet experience in Afghanistan was terrible, the asymetric warfare they faced, while using old school strait ahead tactics themselves, depleted not just the personell but the general moral of the soldiers. Being part of the war machine and forgoten by the homefront this story is riviting from ther first days of boot camp and trainign to the last bullet.

This is a geat war movie. Considering the events of today, 20 years later, it gives you a new perspective. The battle scenes are realistic as are all of the 1980's era Soviet weapons and equipment. I was very much on the edge of my seat in the final battle wanting the Russians to kick butt! Subtitles are good, but better than having the voices dubbed in English. I really enjoyed this movie, very much a Hollywood type production, a great war movie.

This one's a real find. Nice rendition of the Soviet side of the Afghan war, with some really surprisingly good imagery. Well worth putting up with the subtitles.
