Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Before they unleashed the idiotic mayhem of Independence Day and Godzilla, the idea-stealing team of director Roland Emmerich and producer-screenwriter Dean Devlin concocted this hokey hit about the discovery of an ancient portal capable of zipping travelers to 'the other side of the known universe.' James Spader plays the Egyptologist who successfully translates the Stargate's hieroglyphic code, and then joins a hawkish military unit (led by Kurt Russell) on a reconnaissance mission to see what's on the other side. They arrive on a desert world with cultural (and apparently supernatural) ties to Earth's ancient Egypt, where the sun god Ra (played by Jaye Davidson from The Crying Game) rules a population of slaves with armored minions and startlingly advanced technology. After being warmly welcomed into the slave camp, the earthlings encourage and support a rebellion, and while Russell threatens to blow up the Stargate to prevent its use by enemy forces, the movie collapses into a senseless series of action scenes and grandiose explosions. It's all pretty ridiculous, but Stargate found a large and appreciative audience, spawned a cable-TV series, and continues to attract science fiction fans who are more than willing to forgive its considerable faults. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The beginning and ending of worlds, infinity and eternity
Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader of "Wolf" 1994 popularity) does the unthinkable by even suggesting that The Ancient Egyptian Civilization may have been influenced by outside influences, very outside influences. This runs off all inquiries to his theories.

But wait it looks like some one is interested in his cryptology abilities. Catherine Langford (Viveca Lindfors) had a secret that her daddy found years ago. Her secret will change the life of Daniel and Col. Jonathan 'Jack' O'Neil (Kurt Russell). Turns out that they will have a mission that will take them on a sojourn to the other end of the known universe. We go with them. What will we find and will we be able to bet back?

I will not compare media distributions however now Blue-ray and extended versions have become the common and not an exception.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome buy!
Fantastic movie! And on BluRay... what's not to love? The price was phenomenal!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A good intro to a great new sci-fi legend!
Though Stargate and its novelizations promised a wholly different track than that which was followed upon by the film and the subsequent series, it set the ball rolling for something unimaginable, fun, and wonderful. This is a must have for anyone that loves the Stargate series!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Stargate (Extended Cut) Blu-Ray is worth the price
I just found the special edition on SD in the WAL-MART bargain bin less than a year ago, so I was a little squeamish at shelling out cash again for a movie I already own. However, the need to fire up special effects on my HDTV won over my cheapness.

The picture and sound is definitely an improvement, I noticed much greater detail and the extra footage was nice but didn't really change the story much.

There is not the same drastic difference in DVD to BLU-RAY as on say the Disney and Fox disks, but it is better and at a good price if you are a fan of the film. If you're not a fan, you are better off digging in the bargain bins or buying the standard DVD from Amazon.

The story is a good concept that was turned into a great TV show (SG-1). I saw this movie released in the theater when I was in college and only loved the first half of the film and merely thought of the second act as a poorly orchestrated "Dune" rip-off. Now that I am older, I think the movie stands the test of time and the second part is just the result of a good popcorn sci-fi actioner. In fact, director Roland Emmerich went on to direct many Sci-fi disaster films that I enjoy on regular basis. I recommend it.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great flick but...
There's not much else here. You get a commentary from the director and that's about it. You'd think that the bluray release of a movie that spawned a huge franchise (which I'm not really into, sorry) consisting of more than one type of show on the sci-fi channel would have some special features. Give me Something.
But besides that the movie looks great. I mean they probably never expected there to be defintion this good because if you watch it on bluray there is a scene (no lie) that you can see the film crew in the reflection of one of the soldiers sunglasses!!! And it's not a close up shot! Thats why I said they probably never even dream that that would be a problem. When they watched things back in editing they probably never even noticed it! HD is great.
So, overall its a good movie and a great collection for bluray but there's not much as far as extras to keep the disc in for long
