Harrrison Ford brings his reliable brand of focused intensity to Firewall, a family-in-peril thriller that fits Ford like a comfortable old sweater. The venerable action star is visibly growing older now, but he's got a quiet, simmering quality here that perfectly suits his role as Jack Stanfield, Vice President of security at a large Seattle bank that's recently upgraded to a state-of-the-art computer security system (resulting in conspicuous Dell product placement throughout the film). Jack's the only one who can safely crack the system, so he's targeted by a would-be robber (Paul Bettany) whose jittery crew of thugs and hackers kidnaps Jack's wife (Sideways star Virginia Madsen), daughter, and young son, threatening to kill them if Jack doesn't transfer $100 million into the robber's secret offshore account. Like Bruce Willis in 2005's Hostage, Ford rises above the film's familiar generic trappings, and British director Richard Loncraine maintains a low-key escalation of tension that keeps Firewall on track toward a routine but satisfying conclusion. Supporting roles for Alan Arkin, Robert Forster and Robert Patrick add little to the film's turnabout plotting, but fans of Mary Lynn Rajskub (better known as ace computer nerd "Chloe" on the hit series 24) will enjoy her performance here as a loyal secretary who factors into Stanfield's bid to outsmart his captors. Firewall may not be an instant Ford classic like The Fugitive, but it's comparable to Ford's 2000 thriller What Lies Beneath in terms of overall intelligence and crowd-pleasing suspense. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - The right elements are there, but so are the wrong ones, like plot holes...
Powerful actors, a tense situation, surprise circumstances....seems like this should have been a killer, and maybe it was for some. For me, it just seemed like the family (and Harrison Ford) let too many opportunities to escape go right by. That, along with the (admittedly dated) security system, made it difficult to watch the movie progress. Maybe it was good when it came out?....

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - another Jack, on a desperate mission. . .
An icon in the action/adventure genre, the characters Harrison Ford often plays are passive, quiet types, that explode into action only when provoked, and then follow through relentlessly until they overcome whatever obstacles there may be. That broad description covers the basic storyline of Firewall (2006), where Ford plays Jack Stanfield, the head of security for a financial institution, who is forced to help a gang of criminals rob his firm, in order to save his family.

A group of men led by Bill Cox (Paul Bettany) invade Stanfield's Seattle home, and take his wife Beth (Virginia Madsen), daughter Sarah (Carly Schroeder), and son Andy (Jimmy Bennett) hostage. Forced to wear a camera and earpiece, Jack's movements are transmitted back to gang. Cox appears at the bank impersonating an agent of a government agency, but there is a problem with his plan to access the funds, until Stanfield finds a way to make it happen.

Mary Lynn Rajskub, probably best known for playing Chloe O'Brian on 24, is Stanfield's secretary Janet Stone. Stanfield is forced by Cox to fire her, but when the chips are down, he turns to her for help. There's a bit of the flavor of 24, as Janet provides vital aid to another `Jack'. Veteran actors Robert Forrester, Robert Patrick, and Alan Arkin, are familiar faces in supporting roles. Although attempts are made to illustrate his ruthless side, and Cox is quite nasty at times, he mostly attacks the weak and helpless. The role of Stanfield is nothing new for Ford, and he carries it off fairly well, for a guy that was 64 at the time. He may be pushing seventy, but Ford still has a passion for action films. After completing Firewall, his next project would be Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), a film that as a physical challenge, makes Firewall look like a jog in the park.

Firewall is an unoriginal, mildly effective thriller. The villains are amateurish, and not terribly bright. You may not really believe that the Stanfield family could really be hurt, but there are some tense moments, before the action ramps up at the end. As usual, Harrison Ford's performance, does keep things interesting. The DVD has a couple of short bonus features which feature Ford, director Richard Loncraine, and writer Joe Forte.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Don't listen to the naysayers..
..if you like Ford and don't mind him in his role as wronged family man out to wreak havoc on the perpetuators of evil. It's true we've seen him in this role before (and many a time at that) BUT this is still a hands down entertaining, and suspenseful movie that won't have you wondering if it's time for bed yet, though great art it may not be. The formula of wronged family man, as I mentioned, holds true here, set this time in the information age of banking. In spite of his years, Ford still manages to deliver the goods and does more than a decent job of portraying an I.T. bank security manager whose family has fallen hostage to an elaborate scheme to have him rob the system he designed. All in all, it was a fairly intense ride and I enjoyed it.

An original role for Harrison? No. A fast-paced, intelligent thriller in a role that he does best? Yes. Better than Air Force One? Much. As bad as some of these reviews make out? No way! I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. I should probably give it 4 stars all things considered, but for entertainment value alone, I'm giving it 5 stars, Gene. Harrison's still got his chops, and this is a decent movie.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - We've seen this before
Like I mentioned in my Frantic review, Firewall I bought with Frantic as a bonus DVD Wal-Mart exclusive. I am here to explain why threw out Firewall and kept Frantic. Simply put, we have seen this cliche already with Ford as some sort of common man who for some reason knows how to fight like a marine.

Harrison Ford stars as Jack Stanfield, a security expert at a bank who's family is held hostage by Brian Cox (Paul Bettany). Cox needs to recoup his gambling losses so he forces Stanfield to rob the bank he works at.

Nothing in this film is really worth mentioning. There is some tension in the fact that Cox holds the family hostage while Stanfield is at work but like I said, we have seen this film before. You can call it Air Force One, Patriot Games, or The Fugitive. It's same old story with the same old sour puss Ford having a job that dosen't suggest remotely that he shouldn't have the fighting skills of an marine and yet he kicks [...] and take numbers. Take for example the fight at the end of the film. Ford is merely suppose to be security expert at a bank he gets into a very intense fight with a man old enough to be his son. He predictably wins and walks away with his bland family, dog and all, with a beautiful rainbow in the sky. *gag*

If you have never seen any Ford film during the 90's, you'll enjoy this. If so, get Frantic because it actually appeals to an audience with a brain.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - suspenseful, good story
A terriffic Harrison Ford movie. My son is an IT, so that's what drew me to the movie to begin with.
