Description:
Powered by the red-clad, white-towel waving passionate fan-base, the 2006 Cardinals gave us an unparalleled rollercoaster of emotions that swelled to an improbable end as Busch Stadium staged an unforgettable celebration after the Game Five World Series® victory. The St. Louis Cardinals® stumbled toward the postseason and provided little indication of the magic to follow. Yet, after defeating the pitching-rich San Diego Padres® in the NLDS® the underdog Cardinals stunned the New York Mets® ending with a dramatic Game 7 capped by a 9th inning for the ages. Every play, every crafted pitch, clutch hit, strategic maneuver, and historic performance of the 2006 World Series® is preserved forever with this remarkable, one-of-a-kind DVD anthology. The complete game broadcast of the final two victories over the Mets and all five World Series games are in this collection ready for your viewing pleasure. With more than 20 hours of game action and bonus footage this DVD set will become the centerpiece of your Cardinals 2006 World Series library. Your enjoyment is intensified with SleeveStatsTM: the perfect companion to the ultimate baseball DVD experience, offering official stats, trivia, and game summaries right on the each DVD’s cover.

Completist baseball fans will certainly enjoy reliving the full story of the 2006 World Series in The St. Louis Cardinals 2006 World Series Collectors Edition. Not only does the eight-disc set include all five games in the world championship series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers, it sets the stage for the contest with a terrific preface: Games 5 and 7 of the Cards' NLCS (National League Championship Series) win over the New York Mets. One can watch Cardinals starter Jeff Weaver (in Game 5) earn his second win of the playoffs (and first of the NLCS), or Jeff Suppan (in Game 7) allow only one run on five hits in 15 innings pitched. (He was named the 2006 NLCS MVP.)

The Cardinals, going into the World Series with the second fewest number of victories (83) ever in a full regular season, nevertheless had a spirited showing where it counted. Even if one isn't inclined to watch entire games over again, it's fun to skip around to such highlights as Cardinal Albert Pujols' two-out, two-run homer in the third inning of Game 1, or the Tigers' 41-year-old starter Kenny Rogers win in Game 2 (making him the oldest starter to win a game in World Series history). Then, of course, there's World Series MVP David Eckstein's three doubles in Game 4 (the all-time record is four), and Cardinals' manager Tony LaRussa's footnote to baseball history by becoming one of only two managers to win World Series titles in both leagues. The games look great—-exactly the way they appeared and sounded on their original television broadcasts—-and each disc appears in its own holder, which is covered in facts and statistics worth noting. The eighth disc, a 'Bonus DVD,' includes the clubhouse celebration, trophy and MVP presentation, highlights from the NL Central Division and NL Division Series, player interviews, highlights from the Cardinals' 1982 World Series victory, opening ceremonies of the new Busch Stadium, and a Spanish audio track from the original, live Fox En Espanol broadcast. --Tom Keogh

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Must have for any Cardinals fan
This set is fantastic. If you're a Cards fan and want to relive this improbable post-season, you must get this set.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Why is the format different from the 2005 World Series?
Why is it that the format of the 2006 World Series is different from the 2005 World Series between the White Sox / Astros? The A & E box set of the 2005 World Series is recorded and distributed in 16:9 HD and its in Widescreen, it looks amazing, its so sharp and the audio sounds so much better, the players and the background look so realistic, but when you put on one the games for the 2006 World Series its sharp, but its very disappointing. Its recorded and distributed in 4:3 Standard aspect and its fullscreen. The players look like twigs, they dont look proportionate compared to the 2005 World Series where they look so realistic. In all fareness, the picture is sharper than the 2004 Red Sox World Series which I also own, the picture quality on that is just awful but also keep in mind that it was before HD or on the brink of HD and most of those games went way over the 3 hour mark, its understandable, but if your going to make the 2005 World Series in such high quality wouldn't it be expected that the 2006 World Series which by the way was not as interesting as the year prior also be released in HD widescreen format? It doesn't make sense, if their introducing an amazing format the year prior, why would they go back to the standard version when they have the capability of presenting it in a much crisper format. Im disappointed because the only reason I bought it was because of the format, thinking that it was like the 2005 World Series it would also be in widescreen HD, but it wasn't. Lets be ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Must-have for Cards fans!!!
This DVD set has all 5 games with Detroit, and games 5 and 7 of the Mets series. Of course, commercial free with great audio and video. World Series victories don't come around often, and this set offers a great way to preserve those memories. I have been watching replays of these games on Fox Midwest, but twenty years from now (when the Cards have wrapped up 5 or 6 more WS victories thanks to coach of the year 2021 Albert Pujols) these games will still be preserved for me, long after they are regulars on cable TV. The bonus DVD is neat too, with interviews from many on the team. A lot of funny stuff, with people spraying champagne all over eachother while trying to interview. Good, candid stuff that you don't get to see during the course of a regular season. If you or your loved one is a serious Cardinals fan like I am, this is a must have!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - a great DVD set
First off, I'll say that I am not a Cardinals fan. This is a great DVD set, the best that A&E has done, although there are some minor visual imperfections, but overall the quality is very good. This set is the first without the MLB watermark logo, which seemed to be a problem with the other sets. These games are also the first to come with a spanish audio track, which is a nice touch.
For those of that don't have any of the other sets, each game is divided into the innings that are easy to get to. Each case of the DVD has interesting stats on the front, a box score on the back and the play-by-play inside.
The extras are also very nicely put together.
This set is not just for Cardinal fans, but for those that want to preserve a little bit of baseball history.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not reviewing -- Just completing the description
The description for this item is fairly incomplete since it has yet to be released. Here are additional details on what's included in the set, if you are eyeing it as a Christmas gift for family and friends:

* Complete Game 1: Rookie Reyes is Rock Solid
* Complete Game 2: Cardinals get "Tarred and Feathered"?
* Complete Game 3: Count on Carpenter
* Complete Game 4: Eckstein sparks Classic Comeback
* Complete Game 5: Cardinals are Champions!
* Clubhouse Celebration
* Clinching Highlights from NLCS, NLDS, and Division
* Rare Interviews with Carpenter, Pujols, Edmonds, Larussa and more
* Highlights of Cardinals 1982 World Series victory
* Opening of New Busch Stadium
* Spanish audio track of Fox En Espanol broadcast

Disc 8 in this collectors set is also reportedly the same Official 2006 World Series Highlights DVD sold elsewhere for < $20, so save your money and don't mistakenly purchase both DVDs!

I had to give the set a rating, so I gave it a 3/5 to balance all the uninformative 5/5 reviews that will inevitably pop up praising the Cardinals instead of actually offering useful information on this product.
