With the JVC HANC80 noise-canceling headphone, now you can choose the most effective noise cancel mode for the circumstances. HANC80 offers both "wide" and "low" noise cancellation modes. The "wide" mode targets a wider frequency range than the "low" mode, and cancels the type of noise typically found in a commercial jet cabin. The "low" mode cancels a slightly narrower and lower frequency range, one associated with the noise generated by trains and buses. The HANC80 deliver up to 75% noise reduction, and also comes with fully padded closed earpieces which help to block ambient noise, and the padded soft touch headband ensure that they'll remain comfortable throughout a long listening. It also offers a flat foldable style so that they're easy to carry or pack, and comes with a carrying pouch and a dual-plug adapter.

I bought the headphones as a secondary to my bose in-ear headphones. what sold me on the headphones was the noise cancellation ability....i live in nyc and the morning commute is loud and sometimes it's loud to the point that i can't hear my music (i usually turn up the ipod all the way up only to barely be able to hear it). with that said....these headphones did not deliver. the noise cancellation is barely detectable and the over all sound is not as clean as i would expect from the JVC brand. As mentioned the headphone design is poor and makes long wearing sessions impossible.

I had these headphones for about a year now and they served me well until today when the headphones broke at the hinge where they fold. I only used these when I traveled which was probably about 20 times, so they really didn't see much abuse. Poor design.

The headphones arrived very quickly and were half the price I could get them from Walmart, Target or Radio Shack.
They use the white noise method of noise canceling, which eliminates the air conditioning at work and about 3/4 of aircraft engine and air conditioning noise. Because I have never used any other noise canceling headphones I can't do a comparison, but they are impressive to me. They are reasonably comfortable on my head and ears.
I only use the hi/lo switch in lo to get rid of air conditioning and aircraft noise.
I would definitely recommend them as a first pair of noise canceling headphones, particularly as it is not a large investment.
I have used them to listen to mp3s on a laptop, movies on a plane and with my PSP on a plane. One really worthwhile thing is that with the noise canceling on, you don't need to turn up the volume so loud. With the PSP this is important because the batteries last longer.
I don't think I would use them as purely noise canceling without plugging them in to something and listening, they don't eliminate 100% of the ambient noise.

I purchased these to use on a 12 hour plane ride. Unfortunately, the noise cancelling is minimal at best. In fact you have to listed closely to hear a difference. I kept switching them on & off just to detect any differences. Even worse, the sound quality is just plain aweful. Music from my iPod sounded muddled. I ended up using mu VModa ear buds with 100x better results. These were just a waste of money. I recommend spending the additional $$ for a better quality set.
